Help getting off stock spare tire carrier

I'm taking off the spare tire carrier and I'm not sure what to do with the wire for the third break light. Does it unplug someplace? Or do I have to cut the wire or something?

I cut mine and sealed the hole with black silicone. If the wire needs to be used in the future it can be spliced back.

On the inside on the swing gate its a black box that's the 3rd brake light connector. It has one Philips screw. Three should be two wire plugs just unplug them. You don't need to worry about sealing the hole up.

I would not cut the wire. Thi is just simply a rubber grommet that goes through the tailgate. On the inside of the tailgate, remove the black cover and the bracket for the wiring. You can also pull the pins/contacts at the end of the wiring to pull it through the hole in the tailgate. Then find a solid rubber grommet to put back in the hole. Lowe's normally carries them. IMHO if you cut the wire you are opening yourself up for a short and blown brake light fuses.

I cut the wire near the top of the 3rd brake light.

I hooked it up to a led light that I mad fit in a center cap for the spare that's now on a tire carrier.

If you are not going to get a carrier, just un plug it at the hinge point as suggested.

Is this the thing you guys were talking about? If so do I just pull on the two end parts and pulled them through the hole in the front?

Yes disconnect those two wires and pull them through the door. If you are not going to use a third brake light than remove the whole assembly.

Thanks for the help! But one last thing, I shouldn't have any trouble with cops right?

Though I no longer run the OE spare tire carrier or OE 3rd brake light, I strongly believe in the value of the 3rd brake light whether it's required by law or not. There are just too many inattentive, drunk, or drug-impaired drivers out there where the 3rd brake light could more easily catch their attention before they slam into me when I'm stopped. As soon as I can get around to it, I will rig up a 3rd brake light for my ORF spare tire carrier.

That's a good point. Are there any alternatives for the 3rd brake light? I don't have an after market tire carrier so I can't put the third light in the wheel.

I have seen the center cap done more times than I can count but not the way that glows around the edge. Is that reflecting off the rim?

When did you take that pic?
Yes, it's just reflecting off of the wheel. Looks quite strange in person, though.

Just curious, if you thought it was more than just a light in the center, what did you think I did? What were you going to copy?

I thought you actually had a rope light or something similar around the rim. The rim is black so it didn't dawn on me there was shiny on it too.

I didn't realize it looked like that in the dark until my wife followed me home one evening. It's pretty wild looking; almost too much. I almost changed it.

Don't change it. It looks wicked. I wanted more now than before but I still have a stock wheel as a spare. I need to find a 5th wheel like the ones under the Jeep.

I had the same led in the center of a stock Canyon wheel. Just sorta lit it up a little bit.

What should I use to plug the holes after taking the bump stops off? Just the bolts that were in? And also should i do the same for the bolts that hold the tire carrier to the door?

I would go to the hardware store and look for rubber or plastic plugs to cover the holes.
