Help. I need ingenuity...

So, I've never had a spare on my jeep. Finally bought a full size spare and rim. I went to bolt on the tire carrier and found that 1 of the 5 holes had a busted off screw in it and the other one is stripped out.

My question to you all, will I mess up anything if I just drill through the tailgate and put a big screw thew it? Anyone done this before?

I can't extract the screw, it's done. I need to drill it out.

What kind of bit and how big do I need to do this?

If you have a better suggestion let me know. I am pretty mechanically retarded so please dumb down any ideas

What size tire? If you are running 35's I would suggest not wasting your time on mounting the tire to the tailgate. You will need to purchase a swing away tire carrier/bumper combo

Have you tried using an easy out?

Load it up with WD-40 or similar penetrating oil, then give the easy out a shot. You may be able to save the bolt location that way.

Just go slowly using the easy out. It can and will break if you go fast, and wear eye protection. Last time I used one, it broke and shot across the garage...

Id think a 33 would still be too heavy to bolt to the tailgate. I have 33's and ive been running.with the stock spare (used car that came that way) because I havent wanted to shell out the money for a seperate carrier. But i wouldnt.dare mount a 33 to the stock spare tire location either

What do you guys think about this. Drilling all 4 corner holes bigger and all the way through. Rubber washers on each side to prevent damage. That will be a better hold for the mount. See any downside to this?

I work on helichoppers and that crap happens all the time. If the easy out kit doesn't work I would drill all the way into the bolt ( don't go through the gate ) and then use a tap and re thread it. Just make sure you don't use to big of a drill bit and use the same thread count on the tap as the other 3 bolts.

However, even at 33's you run the risk at damaging your tailgate if you jolt it with that 33" tire on it.

is it bad that i have a steel rim mounted with 31s? i also have the brake light extender and the spacer for the mount in steel on it.

Before buying my bestop tire carrier, I ran an olympic oversize tire carrier with a 33x12.5 for a couple of years. The key to doing it is to move your rubber bumpers out to make contact with your tire. Not the idea setup but it definitely got me by for a while. I still have the olympic tire carrier in the garage if anyone is interested

33s will damage the tailgate even a 32 will, it will cause it to warp outward and cause it to leak and not want to close right

98tj. How long does this take to set in? Like could I get by with the Olympic carrier for a few months and get by with little/minimal damage?

Idk exactly how long I just know it will my motherin laws jeep has 32s on it and hers leaks from the tailgate and her hard top glass will actually pop out on the bottom because of the weight and hers has never been offroad to jar it around, I didn't try it I just rode with out a spare on the back until I got my smittybuilt rear bumper with the tire carrier. But I would think you could get by for a little bit

When I ran my olympic I just ended up cutting some hockey pucks as spacers and extended the rubber bumpstops with longer bolts until they fit snugly against the tire. I ran mine like that for well over 2 years and never had a problem with a warped or damaged tailgate.

Drill and tap or use a nutsert, honestly its one bolt hole out of 5, make sure the rest are secure. Then fix the other two. As far as if its too big/heavy, depends how tight to the tailgate you mount it and how heavy it all is.

If its just a few months until you can buy a swing away, I would not worry about putting it on at all... Just saying if you've been driving w/o one for a long time, what a lil longer to do it right?

Do it right once and you dont even have to worry about damaging the read door.

13 Piece Left-Hand Drill Bit Set

you have to drill in reverse, as opposed to standard bits

Go with a smaller size first.

Once you drill enough to relieve the pressure, most of the time the bolt will back out on the bit... if not, you're drilling it out anyways.
