Question help!New upgrades after 10years

I'm a newbie, that needs to get educated before investing.

I own a 2000 TJ Es, stick shift, soft top, 122,000 miles, no AC unit wrangler. As in pretty basic! However, she has served me well for 10 years although she now has plenty of tear and wear.

I live in florida but will be relocating to the midwest area, and I'm expecting a newborn very soon. In addition, I have no intentions replacing my jeep any time soon since my jeep is paid off.

However that being said, I have some doubts... I want to replace my soft top for a Hardtop including doors, an A/C unit installed, new radio, and front and rear seats. Also new carpet until I can afford a Rhino lining.

Overall, I want to make my jeep (dont laugh) comfortable for my newborn understanding it will never replace a cozy SUV, or mini van. Now, once the baby turns 2 years of age, then imma get it dirty!

The estimate cost of this upgrade thus far is totaling $5,000. Would you spend this much? if not why?

I wouldn't.

adding AC screams "HUGE PITA". If you want AC i'd trade jeeps but that's just me...but if you've made it in Florida w/o AC you should be fine elsewhere.

Hardtop vs soft top? negligable...hardtop is a little better...

Carpet will cost you more than a DIY rhino lining... and will be less durable to youngsters.

but in reality, you could spend 6-10k on another vehicle that more fits your needs...and just keep the Jeep as a toy for now.

Thanks for the reply, but whats so bad about A/C unit install besides the price?

Trufully, if I had the money I would buy a nicer vehicle, but i refuse to buy someone elses problems when I have my own. ALthough it would be nice to replace my jeep wrangler for a better one since i luv my jeep!

Bottomline I have one more week to decide whats best, and so far Im running out of options and dealers won't give me a good deal since Im trying to clean up my credit, after someone stoled it (my identity).

I just rhinolined this past week. It cost me 48 hours without my jeep, less then $80 for the rhinoliner and a case of beer. Its way cheaper then a new carpet but its a rough texture. Might not be suitable for a newborn. I also added pieces of carpet ( $10 at auto store) in the trunk area to limit my stuff from bouncing and scraping. I also added it to the wheel wells where a person may rub up against it.

If you are paying someone to install the A/C system, the biggest obstacle for you is the cost.

For the installer A/C systems are just kinda a PITA. I'm not certain on retrofitting one into a Jeep. I don't know how awful it'd be, but It doesn't sound fun to me. (this will be directly reflected on the price).

If you are willing to spend 5k on the Jeep to add these things then so be it. I just don't see it as a wise investment. but again its not my vehicle...

Just know you will never get the 5k back. Around here a A/C is a necessity, other parts of the country not so much. I don't think a hardtop/full doors are really going to have that great an impact on the comfort of the jeep. So that could be money that would be best spent elsewhere. (like on the AC if you are bound and determined to go that route.)

Best of luck on the credit revival. That's a very rough road. Sorry to hear that happened to you.

Regarding the DIY liners you can get many different brands...some are rough sandpaper like (herculiner as example). others aren't rough at all, (monstaliner for example) But thinking of this, if you aren't opposed to getting used carpet I'm fairly confident you could get some for very cheap from a member here since lining the tub has become rather commonplace.

Thanks Mr Carcrazy, i just wanted to be clear about it all. I guess I have lots to think about when it comes to investing 5grand. ANd how hard is it to do a lining coat on the exterior? Becuase I know it would cost me $700 to have a shop do it. And I dont want to spend that much.

X2 on what Carcrazy said.

IDK if you can put the kid in the front seat (with the airbag disabled) but to be honest, getting a car seat for a new born in the back of the jeep was a PITA (the kind of car seat where the carrier latches onto the base), even with an early Unlimited. When the "boy" got older and got into a larger car seat then it wasn't too bad.

snake, i say go for the updates you are talking about doing. it's not worth starting over with another vehicle if yours is in fine working order.

you can get a brand new A/C system with all parts and all brand new for $1100.
1999- 2001 TJ Wrangler AC Kit 2.5 Liter Engine
that is the kit i plan to get for my 01 in the spring.
there is a place local to me that installs this kit (parts and labor) in Jeeps for $1400.

a hard top and full doors are worth the investment, but with winter coming, don't expect to find many used sets at all or for a decent price. once spring hits, people pull the tops off and sell them for extra cash thinking they don't want it anymore. that is the time to buy one.
