HELP! No air coming out of my center and right vents!

Hi Everyone. So, when I slide the air control to direct air to the vents in the dash, only my left vent works! The center and right ones do not, BUT, the defrost vent (on top of the right vent) works .

I know the defrost vents have a seperate 'tube' to direct the air, but for the life of me I cannot figure out what could have happened to cause the center and right main vents to not 'blow'.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

I just looked up a diagram of it and for the life of me I can not think of could have blocked it short of, well I dont even know. The right side looks to have a hose going to it that could have possibly collapsed but the center ducting looks to be hard plastic. Any chance something got in there and nested? Have you done anything under the dash the past couple days?

Looks like it might be time to clean out the duct's you'd be surprised where mice can make a nest..

I had the same problem. Pull your drivers seat and lay under the dash. One of the control arms is probably broke off. Run a sheet metal screw thru the center of it and all is good.

Have you checked the vacuum tube under the hood? Above the battery there should be a small T valve that exits the firewall. My plastic tube had cracked and it was not drawing any vacuum which is what controls the flapper to the vents. By default it will work on defrost, but not the vents if is loses vacuum.

This is some good info Ill have to check out because recently all of my dash vents seam to have stopped working. Defrost works and it seams like the floor vent works too. When I switch it to dash vents I hear the blower working hard but nothing comes out the vents. Air comes out the tiny lil part above the left and right most vents but nothing thats gonna heat the damn Jeep. Now I just need a good enough weather day to do all this and more.

It's only a small black plastic tube, and unfortunately they crack or break altogether.

You can find a hard polyethylene tubing from home depot, a roll of it is about 3 dollars. You can replace all of the tubing, or just a section of it.

Caution: be careful not to pull the tubing too hard on the firewall, where it connects inside the firewall. It It goes into a insolation type foam, and it's a PITA to get the tube if you push it in too far. I recommend working on the tubing from the T joint out. Easy access.

It was the middle actuator arm that was broke off on mine if I remember correctly. This is what it looks like under there.

Excellent info, Guys! I am hearing some type of 'rattle' coming from the dash area recently, so I am wondering if that is what it is?????

What's weirder is that the LEFT vent works fine! It's only the center and right vents?????

Thanks! So, where do I actually access this setup? I have the FSM, maybe I should try there? I guess I have to take the dash apart.....

That picture is like our 97. I would assume an 02 would be the same. Switch the actuator with the other one and see if it is faulty.

Phaeton - THANKS! Do I need to remove the cover under the steering column and knee bolster, or can I get at all of this without doing that?

Remove the cover and steel plate behind it. You can look but it is easier to remove the drivers seat.

Just confirmed even my LEFT vent doesn't work. It was the left and right dimisters (fed by the flexible duct) that work. So, the rattle I am hearing, and the fact that no vents work point to SOMETHING being broke in there. Too damn cold to get into it now. Why doesn't this crap happen in the summer

My 97 TJ has the same issue I only have heat blowing thru my defroster, its really damn cold in the jeep, its worth it in my case to get out there in this great chi-town winter weather and fix it.

Now where do i find that little plastic connector piece to make the middle vacuum actuator move?

UPDATE. Well, I crawled underneath to see the 'vacuum pods' that control the air control. All of them are moving as they should. When I select the main vents, the lever moves perfectly, so I think I have a disconnected 'duct' or a blockage....

Just fixed mine yesterday. I have an 01 tj but I think they are the same. There is a vacume line that runs the switch, mind fell loose. it is located about 8 inches directly the batery. small 1/16 of an inch vacume hose. crawl under the passenger side and look up you should see it. just push it mack on the mail adapter to a black box. If you cant find it PM me and I will take a pic and try and post

The vaccum line that operates the vent switch is connected to the black box under the battery. the switch may appear to work but may not completly open or close the vents without full vaccum. Worked for me...

I know this is an old forum but the problem is the same. I have a 97 wrangler also with the broken leavers that attach to the metal arms of the actuators. Air will only blow at the floor and the side window defrost. I can hear the air blowing at the vents of the dash but air does not come out because the door for the dash does not open and the windshield defrost does not blow air out.

I purchased new leavers but part of the leavers are broken off inside and I have tried all suggestions to get them out. Tried connecting the pieces with the screw which was impossible, I am tempted to use super glue to reattach the broken pieces but if I get the glue in the wrong place I may cause further damage that can not be fixed.

I called the Jeep headquarters and filed a complaint in hopes to get the makers of Jeep to do a recall on this very common problem; it is a very big safety issue when you do not have any air, heat, or can't defrost you windshield. According to Jeep, I am the only one that has filed a complaint regarding this; also stated if they get enough people calling with complaints they could possible do a recall on certain models, years, or even certain vin numbers.

If you have had a similar type problem please, please, call 1-877-426-5337 open 24 hrs. a day and file a complaint. Have your vin. # ready they will ask for it and be sure to ask for a case number for your records. If we get them to do a recall you will receive something in the mail. We should not have to pay $500-$1000 labor to replace a $15 dollar part; or we should not have to lay on our backs practically standing on our heads for two days trying to fix these things, after all if were not for you and I they would not even be in business. Please make that call. Thanks

Hammerhead 55 , you resurrecting old threads for your issues is getting ridiculous. Start a thread if you want to to state your issue. You are cluttering the forum with multiple repetitive posts on resurrected old threads.
