Help Please!!

While I was getting my new tires today I took a look at my brakes and found this. It looks like a u-joint but it's connected to my axle on the passenger side. One of the caps is gone and all the needle bearings are gone and I have an awful bad thunking noise coming from the wheel. Can anyone tell me what this would be called and how hard is it to replace?

Axle joint. Just need to replace it. It is a u joint as well.

Edit: looks as though your axle seal is leaking too. I would replace both joints and axle seals since you will have the axles out to replace the joints.

Remove the brakes, remove the axle nut, remove the bolts holding the unit bearing to the knuckle and then slide the whole thing out of the axle tube. Replace the joint and reassemble. The seals in the axle you have to pull the front diff cover and remove the differential. I had the dealership do all of this for me for around $180 - $200. I didn't feel like messing with all of that. Too lazy that day. lol

Could you change the axel seal without removing the shaft?

The front axles are not c-clip. They just slide in and out.

Is it hard to pull the diff out and put back in to get to the seals?

You have to make sure you don't mix up the shims that are on the left and right side of the differential. Make sure you don't mix the bearing caps up on the left and right side. It has to go back together exactly the way it came out. Make sure you torque the bearing cap bolts to spec.

Great so this is gonna be an all day thing. Ugh I REALLY didn't need this to happen right now. I have no problem with working on my Jeep but lately I have been kinda lazy. Oh well I'm glad I spent a ton of money on tools a couple of years ago...Thanks for all the advise y'all

I done this today on my TJ

the shafts just slide right out, look for a 36mm socket for the axle shaft nut and an impact wrench
Without a u-joint press tool just in a vise
remove the 4 cap retaining clips....good luck my caps were stuck. It took 4 hours from start to finish 2 hours were beating and heating the caps out
and dig thru here Jerry posted very useful links to help
http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/fron...val-67699.html

also a few cold Coronas help out

Thank you for the socket size, that saved me some time. Jerry always has something useful somewhere. I started at about 2 yesterday afternoon and finished up replacing just the one that broke at 11 last night. Most of that time was spent finding my grandpas vise and breaking that one and then waiting for a buddy to get off work so we could go to his house to borrow his vise. Also comes to find out the cap that I thought was missing actually just had the top part of the cap break off so we had to beat to sides of the cap to get it out. Overall not too bad but I am definitely going to replace my brakes and the other joint before that one break. Hopefully I can get a day that isn't gonna rain on me to do all this. Anyways thanks everyone for the help and the links.
