Help Thieves!!!!!!!!

Hey guys/gals my GF's 2003TJ was parked at the airport and someone decided they really wanted her catalytic convertor.

Long story short, the cats gone, the o2 sensors gone and we cant tow it out cause the roofs to low.

So heres the problem I've worked on car allot but not TJ's. When they stole the converter they had to undue the brace that runs under the transmision and its dangling. So is the transmission. My question is this.

Does the transmission bolt to the body of the TJ anywhere or does it sit on top of that cross brace? I'm gonna try and go up there tomorrow with a tool kit and jack and see if I can get it to where I could at least get it down and put on a flat bed. It looks like 3 bolts on the passenger side and then a couple smaller bolts in the center of the brace to connect what I'm assuming is a rubber mount for the tranny.

I've got to meet with an adjuster tomorrow and things I'm listing are Cat, 02 sensors, and a thorough inspection at the stealership to make sure the jerks didn't loosen anything else up in the process.

Thanks for you help guys!

Can you flat tow it? Put everything in neutral and pull out of the parking garage then tow it regular maybe?

The transmission is only attached to the motor and the cross member. Letting it dangle for too long can tear the motor mounts or other items that attach to the motor. If you can, get it back up under there with the crossmember attached and push/pull it out in neutral. Putting the transmission in neutral should let you get it out there to the street where a tow-truck can get to it.

I've heard of people steeling cat's before, but I didn't think they'd go through the trouble of taking off the skid and crossmember on a TJ. THey mostly target newer vehicles, and specifically imports, but wow. Sorry to hear about the bad news though.

Thats the info I was looking for. I was worried about motor mounts as well since its been parked there for a week and we dont know when this happened. But if I can get it out of the garage and to the dealership for a quote at least I'll have some info to talk to the insurance peeps about.

i was suprised they stole it out of a TJ as well. The only thing i can think of is that its easy to get under since its lifted but the aftermarket cats are fairly cheep for the Jeep unlike import cars so I dunno.

gonna be headin up there first thing in the morning.

I was afraid of towing it without securing the transmission becuase the bumps and jars would definatley tear the mounts up

Jeepse are easy targets, easy to get under, 30 seconds with a battery powered sawzall. I can't believe they don't have it on tape, airports have more cameras than the olympics and that nobody heard it. There was a commuter parking lot in NJ about 3 months ago that had 75+ taken. I would also bolt the crossmember back up.

sorry to hear that, we've had some train stations hit, and some new dealerships where they got over 50 or so. the worst part is nobody is questioning these thugs when they go to the recycler with 100 new cats, and walk out with thousands of dollars.

I would never make it as a thief.... Never would I think about housing radiators or cats. Guess I'll just be dirt poor for all my life.

Besides that - I wouldn't make it in jail.

brand new they have more platinum, and whatever is valuable in there. think about fords, trucks, taurus w/ three cats, 1 on each y, then down to another cat. junk guy told me those go for over $200. no matter how much they're worth, it sucks

Cant you just bolt up the brace and drive it out with a loud cat.. or get in and steer it. and use straps and pull you out of the garage..
