Generally the units are targeted at either street driving or trails. If you want turn by turn directions the street models are best but they won't give you the trail information and will have limited battery life. Trail units will have the streets marked (assuming you purchase the separate mapping software) good trail info and longer battery life but will have less resolution and few "driving" features.

I don't know of a unit that does both well.

I have the Garmin 60Cx with City Navigator on one removable Sandisk and there Topo installed on another Sandisk, I use this for street routing and Offroading when I go Geocaching
you might want to look at one of the ... Garmin Nuvi also ???
I have been very happy with Garmin very good customer service

I called Garmin they told me you could put topo maps on a SD card then install the card in There "NUVI" GPS and it works great, plus the NUVI comes preloaded with all city map plus tons on points of interest such as........ resturants, gas stations, banks, hospitals, parks, shoping malls, stores, you name it it has it loaded
and the easy part is when you want to use the topo you just use this path in the NUVI ..............to switch maps: Tools > Settings > Map > Map info
very easy.............. I think I will put a NUVI on my Christmas list this year

does no good whatsoever on the roads, but for off-road, bushnell makes the "onix" that you can put aerial photography, topo, or base map

i hunt with it, and also great on the lake. nothing could be better but the base map only has freeways... no surface streets, and it's hand held

You may be able to put in the Topo disk but I don't believe the unit will link to a GPS unit to download waypoints, tracks or routes. The street units usually don't have a "mark" function, an altimeter, an electronic compass, fishing schedules, distance traveled, elevation gained, etc. The unit targeted for outdoor use are far more usefull (for non-driving applications) than a unit designed for street use. Not to mention they will have far longer battery life.
