Another 2.5 would be cheap and easy and easy to find.

The 2.5 replacement is your best option. Can you rebuild it?

If your going to do a swap, would recommend swapping to a small block V8 rather than a 4.0 swap. I am doing a 2.5 to 4.0 swap and stroked it to a 4.6 in the process. It is just as much work as a Chevy 350 swap, if not more.

I'm not positive but I believe so. I think if you get another fuel injected 2.5 and transfer all the electrical and mounting hardware from your current 2.5 you should be fine. You might run into a challenge if find a 2.5 from a doner rig earlier than 91.

I am using a 4.0L block from a 89 cherokee, with 94 Cylinder head, a 96 intake manifold and fuel rail and many other parts from different years all in my 94 YJ. The key is to keep everything you currently have on blown engine and transfer this to the new engine. This is how I can run a renix block in a YJ. So try to get a fuel injected 2.5 and then transfer all of the sensors and mounting hardware to the replacement engine. If you find that there is an incompatibility somewhere you will have the part from your blown engine to transfer over. At least this is how I have pieced my stroker engine together taking parts from different years to get the best of all revisions.

Hope that helps
