help with misfire, sputtering etc

i am stumped, my jeep was misfirng sputtering about a year back ppl said bad 02 so i disconnected the upstream one, it ran fine with the check engine light on for a like a year, now its doing the same thing even with 02 disconnected, when u hit gas in neutral its fine no missses etc, when u put it into first and start driving it starts doing it misifirng runnign like crap etc,engine has 30 k on rebuild, fuel pump is only a few years old, is there any sensor that monitors trans speeed? im lost the jeep is a 97 tj 2.5 manual , thanks

forgot to add getting codes 12, 42,55 and gas gauge isnt working

I was having trouble with this and It ended up being a terminal on the coil pack was rusty and it was causing cyl. 3 to misfire badly. Cleaned it up with some sand paper changed the plug wires and it stopped sputtering and misfiring. May be a long shot but check out your ignition terminals.

Personally I wouldn't run it w/o o2 sensors...thats how it decides how much fuel...

The possibilities are endless.

step one in my book would be to fix the obvious things...like the o2 sensors.

find out what the codes mean

97 should be OBD2 - so codes should look like P0171 or something similar.

fixed intermentent jeep misfire

To help i just fixed an intermentant misfire and have some things to help id problem

if obvious items are good such as plugs wires distributer distibuter rotor coil then try this

if engine misfires at an consistant rpm it could be TPS switch located on backside of air intake manifold the electrical sensor has moving parts and could have a bad spot
to test rev engine in neutral to the bad rpm point if misfire then good chance it is TPS, replaced 3 on 97 TJ over past 3 years cost $40 at autozone can replace in 10 minutes
the tach also pinged to the right but the engine did not rev, made me think it was electrical

If the misfire is only noticed when driving, and does not appear to happen at same rpms it could be a crank position sensor That was my problem it had a kinked wire , shorted, it made partial connection and would randomly misfire at various rpms easy to get to, replaced in 5 minutes, i replaced it for $80 from autozone

when this sensor went out the tach would also ping to the right without engine rev

undo the wire that run into the cpu and see if their is power steering fluid in it. if so their is a switch or something in ur powersteering pump that when it failes sends powersteering fluid all threw ur electrical

I cn identify your codes; 12 code is battery power to PCM disconnected, 42 code is, An open or shorted condition detected in the Auto-Shutdown Relay circuit. and 55 code is End of Code Output.
