Help with replacement soft top

Just found out about this forum and glad to be aboard.

I have a question concerning a replacement soft top: We have a 2000 Wrangler, half doors and I would like to replace the soft top. The frame is Ok, so I assume I need the top with rear window, the 2 side curtains and the half door skins. No tinted windows or anything fancy, just a reliable replacement for the original.

The problem is when I started looking online, I was pretty overwhelmed with the number of companies selling the items I need.

I wondered if there was 2 or 3 that are recommended by forum members where I can get a good product at a good price.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

To me, it is really going to depend on how much you have your top up and budget. Besttop sailcloth is the best, pretty sure they make the OEM tops. They are pricey. I've had 2 wranglers, each time I replaced the tops with a rampage soft top? Fits the factory hardware. I bought it on amazon for 300 and free shipping and tinted windows. Not nearly as thick or quiet but it keeps all the elements out. I've had zero issues. With that being said, my next top will be a frameless top by besttop.

Bestop is the way to go. You get what you pay for like everything else.

you've hit the motherload of great opinions here and will get great advice. It helped me to compare using the Quadratec magazine or website where many tops are sold and described/compared. I've bought 3 soft tops from them and have found their customer service excellent. After the purchase, dealing directly with Bestop has been a pleasure too, so I stick with them. Do you know which top/frame you have? If not, post a couple photos and the folks here will guide you. Welcome to the forum!

Not to confuse you further, there are other options such as frameless tops. The basic deciding factor is::

Like to puit the top all the way down - Framed top

Like to remove the windows and have a Safari top - framless

With regards to place and price, Google is your friend when you decide on a part number. (Amazon usually is very good on price)

Not sure what your budget is but check out the Softopper (Jeep Wrangler TJ - Jeep & SUV Tops). If you search for top replacement on the forum, you'll see a ton of recommendations (and why we recommend it).

Last year I replaced mine and got the Quadratop. It was a little cheaper than the Besttop but overall really good quality. After a year in the florida sun it still looks as good as new. It fits nicely on the stock frame too.

You will surely like the Besttop sailcloth. Good quality and fit. Worth your money.

Get the frameless top. I didn't and it is my only regret (in regards to money I've spent on my jeep)

Thanks so far, everyone! We pretty much just want to replace the original top and keep the frame as is, so I'm looking for the top itself, the 2 side panels and the door skins.

Would like to get Bestop sailcloth if within budget.

This is a bit above budget, but may be worth the money:

Bestop 79121-01 - Bestop® Sailcloth Replace-a-top™ with Half Door Skins for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec

Wondering if anyone sells this top at a lower price?

When I was looking for a soft top for mine the quadratec website has a soft top advisor thing. They also have that chat on there, they do the navigating for you of you tell them your situation. Take it or leave it. Ps went with the trektop nx. Love it. But sounds like you're sticking with the framed.

I have friends with frameless tops but I like my factory soft top much better. If I ever have to replace it this is what I will go with.

Last time I bought a soft top I went to the dealer and ordered a top thru them. Top notch StaFast fabric with rails and bows. Price was better than I could find elsewhere.

Still looking around, found a better price with Morris 4X4, $713, free shipping and that's for the sailcloth.

Question: Is the sailcloth the best there is? I notice there are a few good prices with the Bestop, but not advertised as Sailcloth.

I'm going to keep checking around and buy in the nest month or so.

Get a softtopper, I love mine!!

I think Twill might be the best, not sure because they're really pricey. Sailcloth is your best, feasible option.

I like softopper but the only thing turning me away is the small side windows. Why do they make them small? All that wasted space surrounding the windows could have been used. Still a good top though.

I bought a Bestop soft top for my 2000 tj with half doors, very high quality and nice. I've always heard these were the best and I was not disappointed.

I thought the same thing when I first looked at it. But having it now, the look is growing on me, and anyone who rides in the back doesn't have any complaints!

If anyone does decide to get the Softopper, I highly suggest finding some used door surrounds (if you don't already have) because the ones they make aren't as nice and I've heard mixed things.

That comes from auto tops direct. I bought one directly from them and I got the sailcloth one. So far I can't complain. For the price you can't beat it. If I get a couple of years out of it I'll be happy.

Correct you are, thats who it shipped from. If it keeps the wet out and isnt sloppy looking I'll be very pleased. Not sure what justifies a $600 more for the replacement top if you just want that functionality.
I have a hard top for the winter so the softtop isn't actually up very often.

I'll give my amateur opinion after I get it

Just checked this one: Amazon.com: Sierra Offroad Jeep Wrangler TJ (1997-2002) Factory Style Soft Top with Tinted Windows, with matching Upper Door Skins Black Sailcloth: Automotive

It's less than half the cost of the Bestop Sailcloth, but I really want something that will last and is quiet.

Thoughts???

Here are 2 tops I am looking at, both have free shipping (Amazon Prime). QuadraTop is $309.99 vs. Sierra for for $229, with Sailcloth). Which way would you go?

I went with the smittybilt soft top. 279.00 on Amazon. 2 year warranty and low cost made it appealing. I saw a few in person all were wrinkle free. Wrinkles were the main thing I was trying to avoid on a low cost soft top. My expectations were very low, but am very surprised how well it fit. It will stay on till the warranty expires and falls apart.

How long do the originals lsat? I just bought my TJ, 2005 with 82k on it. Could this be the original top? Or, has it already been replaced. The zippers on it are not holding on the back window.

When I bought my '97 Sport last summer it had the original top on it. I replaced it this past April (so call it 17 years). The only real issues were that the windows were pretty marred up and one of the zippers was getting to be a pain to get started. The zipper would work once it got started but took a bit. The top itself, though, was leak free.

Went with the Softopper and love it.
