I don't think your experience is the norm.

There are no problems with Jeeps merely new 'projects'

Of those listed, i'd recommend the '00 4.0
Never had a moment of problems with my '03.
As with ANY vehicle, have a pre-buy inspection done by somone who KNOWS the type of vehicle you are considering (in this case, Wranglers).

Can narrow your search if your friend decides whether she wants a 4 or 6 cyl and a manual or automatic. In my experience most of my female friends would want the 6 cyl power to get out in traffic and an automatic so they have a free hand for the phone, makeup, etc. If she truly doesn't care (unusual in my experience) then make sure she's not looking for a specific color. Thats the next biggest concern when I help my wife look for a vehicle. Also, make sure she rides in a Jeep for longer than 10-15 minutes before buying. My wife would never drive my Jeep as her daily driver. Rides too rough and too loud for her. Finally, if you like this friend be careful offering too much advice. If it turns out she doesn't like your choice you'll hear about it for months after she's in her next vehicle.

I'm going to go against the grain and say that black 97 is the best choice on that list. The 2000 could have the cracked head issue...being that it's a private party sell with no warranty I wouldn't even chance it. Yea the 2.5 is gutless but it's reliable and will get her where she needs to be.

I dunno what her budget is but i'd look at 03-04's (no cracked head or opda issue) auto's with the 4.0 and full doors....she might not like soft uppers.

The first link is sold, but the second link is not. WranglerForum.com uses BB code and it doesn't play nice with links that have brackets in them.

Here's a fixed version of the second jeep in that list.

I thought only the saharas had the cracked head issue? But I could be wrong.

Nope, if I remember right all 00-01 that don't say TUPY between cylinders 3/4. Take a flash light and try looking through the oil filler hole...you should be able to see if it says TUPY or not.
