Here is my ford 9 inch rear axle,, or maybe 9.5 inch. Help me identify it

Ok guys well a friend of mine is building me an axle he got for me supposedly it is a 9 inch we were told and it does look like it. But after i ordered the gears (4.11) something has make me guess we actually don't have a true 9 inch but a 9.5 or a 9 3/8 as some of you know.
I will post some pictures for you to help me clarify what it is that i have.

The end product

how ever what make me wonder that i don't have a 9 inch is because i ordered gears and if measured from the bottom (no teeth) is 8 3/8
however the gear we pulled out of the axle measured 9 inches at the bottom so it is a big difference

i checked here but i need more information than what is provided

any help will be much appreciated

Yup... Thats a 9 3/8 3rd member, a real oddball as far as gears are concerned.

Find a 9" center section that is 31 spline and everything will fit, all of the 9 3/8 rear ends I have ever pulled a part have been 31 spline and large bearing, same as the 9". The housing is the same also so all is not lost, just find a new third member. If you look for a third member, make sure that it is not a WAR case.

We found a 9 inch center section but it is 28 spline so we will use a spool 31.
It might squeak on U turns but I don't really care about that..
Oooh I will check so it won't be a WAR case..
What is the real problem with those?

On the WAR cases the iron that it was cast from was brittle and wouldn't hold up very well.

One more thing, before you spend the money on any 31 spline diff be it a spool or otherwise, check with either whoever you are buying it from or someone who has done this before to make sure that the diff bearings for the 28 spline and the 31 spline are the same, I think they are different but I also believe you can get the bearings to match the two together.

My computer is not letting me edit my post but remember you will have a 28 spline third member and a 31 spline differential.

That part is fine but the problem will come when the 31 spline spool mounts into the 28 spline 9" third member IIRC. Just check with someone much smarter than I. I think it will work ok I am just trying to have you not have any surprises when everything gets assembled.
