I have slept on my hardtop in a sleeping bag on a camp rest, so I would say a roof rack with plywood bottom would work fine. The sides would hold you in.

I know everyone's money situation is different. More power to you for wanting to save a buck and "camp out". That is how my dad is. He and I took long road trips when I was young (California to Pittsburgh) and did not stay in a motel once. single cab chevy meant we slept in the bed or in the cab if it was raining.... Hope you find a nice cheap roof rack that works for ya!!!

Couldn't you just take out your back seat and get a sleeping bag? And, remove the install-a trunk for extra room?

What about this option, "Crew Bed"? It just folds up and nothing on top. Your own private motel 6, you even have room for a little playtime. hehe. Sleeps 2.
