hi guys! noobie

hey i am a newbie but have been a jeep lover all my life i currently own a 98 red 4cyl. I'm sure this has been covered but are their any advantages to me having the 4 banger vs the 6? thanks!

Yeah, what he^^^^ said... I wouldn't worry about having the 4 instead of the 6, you can make up for the power difference with gearing in the low speed stuff, and if you are looking for a drag racer, you should sell it all together and buy a muscle car!

Less weight? Yes but less power. The HP/LB ratio is better for the 6cyl.
Less breakage? Highly debateable. I have not seen postings on this or any other Jeep board that would substantiate that.
Better mileage? Yep, at the cost of power. I don't know about you but 2 or 3 mpg will not dictate which vehicle I'd choose.
I keep talking about power don't I. Before all of the drag racer posts start let me explain. By the time you add real bumpers, skid plates, a winch ect... you will be wishing you had the extra power of the 6cyl.

Both are great vehicles!

The only good think IMHO is less breakage. Its going to be harder to break things if you dont have as much torque. You can of course still break stuff. I'm sure lots of guys with 4-bangers will tell ya that. But its less likely. Not trying to dog on your Jeep or anything Its probably just as capable as a I-6. Have fun with it!!

IMO that less breakage thing can go both ways. If you are trying to crawl up something with the six it might have enough power to walk it up with you. The 4 you might have to give it some juice to make it up which can cause hoping and such which can definitely lead to breakage of drivetrain components. Especially the D35.

But It's real hard to say which one is the "best". I've driven a friends righ with the 4 banger and 6.38 gearing and I think that my 6 with 3.73 gearing is pretty damn comparable to the pep his has with the monster low gears.

well thanks guys for the warm welcome and info...i've heard a lot of debate about this issue but my buddy says is a better engine for just trail riding which i mostly intend to do. he has a custom frame with a toyota 22r engine with a land rover body..he works at east coast rover here in maine...so i figured he would know...now i gotta get shopping for a lift. i have 31 inch mtr's right now but i'd like another 4 inches anyways

What on earth do you do to get 28mpg?
I can't imagine this sceniero. A 200 mile stretch of flat desert highway and you were doing 45mph in 5th gear?
I am sorry for being so sarcastic and I am HONESTLY not trying to call you a liar but 28mpg seems a bit high. I read 6 different Jeep boards and no one has reported mileage over 22 mpg.
Even the good ol EPA doesn't rate them that high and we all know their numbers are 10% - 20% more than real word driving. The highest rating from 1988 thru 2006 was 21mpg for the
I4 with a 5 speed on the highway.

David's jeep isn't exactly normal. he has taken out everthing that isn't involved in making the jeep go forward. so all that hvac, think he's runnin electric fan, etc. and of course flat land helps. but i've wondered his 28mpg secret for a while now.

Well - the drastic increase occured right after I replaced my O2 sensors; before then it ran at about 22 or 23 or so down here. My '28' figure is consistent to this day, and calculated using my GPS (so the distance travelled is acurate). This is driving between phoenix and back (about a 1000' elevation change over 100 miles - so flat) cruising at 75mph minimum, and driving up to Show Low from Tucson (about a 4000' climb, with lots of canyons and mountain passes to cross over - typical mountain highway) it gets anywhere from 26 to 27 driving at about 65mph on average.

130,000 miles of not replacing them Oh and also - the Jeep stank of "Rich fuel" when using engine braking, especially on the trail.

It is pretty awesome except on the road. He's got a 4:1 in it too. When you put it in 4LO and Stand on the brakes it can still bark the 37's.

That's why it gets trailered everywhere.
