Holy Heat Gun.

Well, I just found this site a few days ago, after buying my first jeep last weekend. I am not sure where I saw the post but someone mentioned taking a heat gun to your fender flares to turn them back to black. My 97 had some very gray flares on it, so I borrowed a heat gun from a buddy and sure enough, they are damn near jet black again. I was amazed at how well it works. I then did the flares on my dads ranger also. It is very simple to do and quite effective. Simply turn the gun on high and slowly wave it over your gray flares and they will turn black right before your eyes.

Mine are a little streaky looking, but not bad. I would imagine if I went over them again they might look better. But I just wanted to thank whoever posted that and share my findings. I will try to post pictures tomorrow.

have heard pros/cons on this proceedure. yes it appears to work but have heard it doesn't last. if it's a 10-15 min process, no biggie-just redo when you clean the jeep. personally i'm one of those that doesn't like doing something the 1st time and i sure don't want to keep redoing it. think if mine got that bad, i'd just bite the bullet and clean/prep/paint them-but that's just me.

yeah i did the same thing with mine it turned them black again but they have streaks on them and i returned the heatgun before i could run over it a second time so im not sure if that wil get rid of the streaks. but did it like 3 weeks ago and still black

Yeah they are a little streaky...I only did it once too. But my buddy has the heat gun so I could easily borrow it again.

And robbiecc for the time it took me to wave a heat gun over it I would rather have to do that again in six months or however long it takes to fade than strip the flares and paint them. i did all of the flares in probably 20 minutes...if that. Wasn't bad at all. They look WAY better than before...

I don't have a close up of the after, but as you can see from the full view form a little further back they look very good. Much better than before for sure.

You can also get a good view of the bedliner I put on my grill and front corners last night

Thanks! I have had it exactly one week now and have a list growing rapidly...I'm kind of afraid this thing is going to cost me some money...but it will be awesome! lol.

PS. I bought the roll/brush on rustoleum for ~43 bucks at wal mart. It says there is enough to do like 140-160 sq. feet. I'm pretty sure I could do my whole jeep. 3 coats on front corners and grill barely made a dent in the gallon. And I don't have to worry about overspray...

My only concern was brush strokes being visible, but once it dried they disappeared as the texture showed more. I'm very excited the liner feels like it should last a life time (crossing my fingers here I don't wanna jinx it lol)

Yes sir. It's quite a bit cheaper if you figure it that way. I mainly did the brush on kind for ease of use. For me it was easier to tape and brush than try to take the whole grill off. And I want to do the tub without getting splatters everywhere inside from overspray. That gallon of bedliner is the best investment I have made in awhile (aside from my jeep of course).
