Homemade fenders

ok not so much made, but i was like screw buying 400$ fenders, ill look into cutting, painting and sanding mine.

has anyone done this with success? how would one go about it and still have them street legal ( the turn lights )

there 7" flares like this

Now:

i know this is a JK, but i wanna cut them to be like flat flares.... so like these:

think i could do it?
how would i get the light to work?
and rounding off the fender? any tips?

Thanks again

Yea, mine are cut more flat than yours. Personally I hate the flat fender look and like how mine are slightly trimmed. I think we used a dremel cutter to cut mine. Ill probably end up buying the metal tube fenders down the line, but as for now my stock fenders are working just fine.

Do you have any pics of your cut flares? I would like to see them if you do.

Thanks

Same here, if we could see pics, that would be awesome i haven't done mine yet, and i really like the flat look :// so maybe this is work out, my plan.

plan in my head:

1. measure 4 1/8 out from body, at 6 points on each flare, marking the points, then getting painters tape? or just a pencil line lol

2. cut with a jig, or dremel cutter, if jig, ill keep the blade speed up to make a cleaner cut

3. somehow round and sand it.

4. heat gun the flares.

5. apply some sort or edging

I have 7" of flare so i can kinda pick and chose my width, maybe 5" looks better? ill just go to that. so yeah i have lots of options, the stock flares are pretty short so cutting them makes them pretty small.

i found this thread, and it helped ATON.

Just had to do it

I did steps 1-3 as BeepBeep listed except used a permanent marker. Wasnt totally perfect but cant really notice unless you go right up to it.

As for Heatgun the flares thats a great idea to get all the stuff I couldnt get from sanding it off.

Ill get pictures when my Jeep arrives next week.

Does anybody know what type of 7" flares those are on that red Jeep in the first post? I'm looking for some for my Rubicon as the stock ones don't cover my 12.5's well enough. If you have them, how do you like them and how good are they? Thanks.

???

To get that flat look by only cutting off some of the plastic, good luck. Go to a website that sells metal tube fender kits and buy the lights, then remount under. Street legal. You will see where the fenders you currently have; attach vs the flat plastic fenders. Find a welder and buy the tube fender kit if you change your mind.

Mine, which I will post up pics soon. Arent totally flat and actually have some overhang, but I like the way that looks over making it flat. But heck if flat is your taste you should make it flat = )

But also I did keep the turn signals on the fender flares

Nice! See here in Indy we have no such law, but that doesnt mean I want it to look retarded. I want some flare atleast 4" which I wont have with stock flares.

I ended up cutting my flares a while ago to get a little more clearance. I didnt what to mess with the fender itself or the other light on the flare so I started cutting after the light on the flare. I just used a lot of blue tape and a jigsaw to do mine then sanded down all the ruff edges.

we cut my budies fenders a few weeks ago and got rid of both lights on the front fenders and relocated the blinker to fit in the "W" on each side of his warn bumper. I'll try and get some pictures of his jeep later on today if you want.
