Homemade soft top disconnects?

Has anyone ever made their own?

I was looking at these:

Original Replacement Parts 4465-BL - Billet Soft Top Disconnects in Black for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec

...but is there any reason I couldn't just drill out the existing ones and insert some pins? How snug do they have to fit? What am I missing? This seems like it would be an easy mod.

$50+shipping is pretty pricey for such a thing and the way the ends in those mount to the soft top supports (one little screw) looks a little flimsy. Unless there is something that I am overlooking, I think I could go to my local hardware and do it for about $10. Did a search and came up with one old result from someone who had homemade ones, but no details.

Any thoughts?

We sell these Quick Release Bow Knuckles for $25. Same idea.

Personally, i don't find it that hard to remove the torx bolts, but I don't take my top totally off that often. (and I get a free supply of replacement bolts when I lose them, too!).

Homemade? I wouldn't think it would be that hard. Just keep in mind that when you drive at freeway speeds there is a LOT of downward pressure on those connections. Wind is HEAVY. So you need a nice tight fit that still rotates. A pin is fine, just make sure it's big enough to fit snugly, but not too tight.

I did this and it works great and no wrench to find when you want you top off.
