Post How big of tire can I put on 15" stock wheel

I have a 2000 Wrangler Sport with 15" alloy wheels and 30x9.50 tires. Can I run 31" or 32" tires on these wheels without a lift kit? Does it matter what rear axle I have or the gear ratio? I have a Dana 35 with 3.73 gears.

I have a 2001 Sahara with stock wheels that I have over 60,000 miles running both BFG and Cooper 31X10.5X15 tires without any problems at all and I have 3:07 gears. It won't snap your neck on take off but it handles the mountain passes in Colorado just fine and where it starts to bog down I just use 2nd gear (automatic). When I get on any of the Colorado back roads 4X4 Low range takes care of them. I probably couldn't do any extreme rock crawling but I don't want any dinged up body parts so that's no problem.

Did you have to install a lift kit? I am new to the Jeep scene.

I have a few friends that were able to put 33s on their 15" wheels. I'm putting them on mine in the morning. The guy that is doing it for me said they'll fit but hitting any big bumps will make them rub. You'd prolly want a lift tho at some point. I'll be getting a 4" suspension lift on Monday.

I ran 31"'s with out a lift. 2" to 2.5" will get you 32"s.

You can run 31s with no lift but they'll rub when you turn while backing up. If you want to go any bigger you'll need to do some kind of lifting. Also if you put 33s on stock wheels they'll rub and ruin the sidewalks of those nice expensive tires.

I put 33-12.5-15s on my stock TJ this morning and they only rub when I try to turn sharp. I won't take it in the mud till I get my lift on Wednesday tho, because I'm sure if I hit a good rut it will hit. I still have about a 4" space around them in the wheel well.

I'm running 31x10.5x15 on stock rims. 2 things, you cant run bigger than 32 without a lift and you will lose some power without regearing. 31 or 32's will not be too bad. anything bigger and you need a lift and for best results regeared.

Those of you with rubbing, you know you can just add a washer or 2 behind the steer stop bolts and fix that problem right. Takes less than 3 minutes.

I put a 26" x 10" on a stock wrangler wheel, but I had to let out at the 1000' marker cuz it was getting squirly. I'm sorry, that's probably of not help to you.
