Jerry, I know where all my breather and vent tubes are except for my transmission breather. Most tubes run to the height of top of the radiator. Does the 5 speed standard, 1998 2.5 tranny have a tube or just vent on top. I will probably check after I get off work but your input is appreciated.
I fish often and am always driving deeper than I probably should. Your post got me a little worried but after 13 years of having my jeep, I ha e yet to have a tranny issue

Hey Jerry could driving a 3 speed auto TJ through something like pictured above toss any water in your trans? Basically is it just best to keep a 3 speed auto TJ out of water as much as you can?

Pretty much any level of water *could* enter the transmission but with water that high, it is much more likely. The water level would be less than a foot away from the vent.

Went through a hole and stalled with water almost to the top of my seat cushion. So my butt was almost getting wet. Water went through the exhaust and thankfully the cat warmed it up enough not to crack the block when it filled up the back cylinder. Pulled all the plugs and did some trail TLC. Got her home, changed the oil the next day, checked all my fluids, good to go.

This is why I ask, and this was just a small tropical storm, I expect more flooding down here in Florida when the hurricanes start hitting

MY 2002 Dealer Brochure states they tested and approved these Jeeps for 20" of water fording. So if Jeep says 20" is okay, I have to think you could go even a few inches deeper.

That's no big deal, shouldn't have any issues. The main thing when crossing water is to go slow, unless its thick soupy mud where slow is impractical.

I've seen people totally trash their engine in water that shallow just because they thought it would be cool to hit it at high speed.

The diff and t-case breather locations will all be the same (as long as you have the np231 t-case). The only thing that'll vary is the tranny breather.

good pix! the tranny breather being to lowest of the group appears to be about 22" off the ground, makes sense, based on Jeep's claim that the TJ is good to go thru 20" of water.

I see alot of comments about if you've been really deep in water that you should be checking your engine and fluids for water etc. This concerns me seeing as how the other weekend I went through a mud "puddle" that ended up being as deep as my hood/right under. I bogged for a second, then threw the rpms and it crawled out with ease at a medium pace. I thought it was fine seeing as I made it out in a timely manner but I see comments that say I should be concerned. Is it a big deal? And how do I check for water in my axles/engine etc. Driving an 06 wrangler Btw. Stick. Thanks in advance.

if your seals and gaskets are not leaking fluid out then they are not going to let water it.

unless of course you sit submerged in water for a long period of time.

If you have more than a 2.5-3" lift you may need to just go but tubing and extend them (this only applies to the axles unless you have a bl greater than 1.25"). I have a 2.5" OME lift and I had to reroute the rear diff breather to give it some more slack, it wasn't close to reaching. The front axle was pretty good though.

PStov how do I go about checking that? And I definitely will extend them. I just put on half (the rear end) of a 3" lift this weekend, putting on the front Saturday since I ran out of time last visit. I'll have to try and do it then. Can I get tubing from a Napa or O' Reillys to replace it with?

Yep, 32rh certain death. I don't usually go mudding, but after a day of trail riding this was the last spot we came to. My son was itching to hit some mud. Should have mad the adult decision. Almost had her rocked out till the distributor got wet. Ended up siting there for about 45 min. First replaced the starter. Then all fluids and transmission mud filter. Now I need alternator(bearings noise), transmission and a fan clutch. Yep, she'll stay out of water/mud. [IMG][/IMG]

Yes. But keep them separate (don't connect one hose to another to make one long hose) because the diffs and t-case and tranny use different fluids.

I'm pretty familiar with water as well. It's all I've got to wheel in really; well water and mud I guess. And I wasn't trying to call you out by the way; I was just pointing out that the condition of your seals don't mean crap if the breather goes under. Sorry if I sounded aggressive. Ha

Crawl under there and look for them.
Here's a D35 breather axle side:


D30 breather axle side:


D30 breather top side (small white cap thing, by the radiator):


I don't have pictures of the D35 breather top side but it's by the fuel filler neck. The np231 top side is on the firewall. As for tranny, it varies.

The breather for the 42RLE (auto trans with OD on 2003-2006) is located on the dipstick tube.



The breather for the NP241 (rubicon t-case) runs out under drivers seat to about bottom of firewall behind engine block.



Notice the caps on the ends....those are important.

Truly the key to making it home is knowing how to drive through the water and having a 32rh that has been modified.

You jeep can go all the way to the bottom of the water. Getting out is the problem. I wouldn't go deeper than the bottom frame if my vents were good.
