how do i tell ?????

how can i tell what axles i have, or front and rear end

dana 30 or 40 or something else..

its a stock 2006 X model, and i know the gears are 3.07 (on window sticker, still have but not listed as what the axles or front end or rear end is)

is it the bolt pattern i need to look at, or do i need to open up the diff plates and count teeth?

another question is, how hard is it to change gears, i have 31x10.5 on 15x8's... should i change them or leave em' be.

thanks for your help gang.

you have a dana 30 front, and most likely 35 rear, but maybe you're lucky and have a 44 out back.

and absolutely no offence please to my answer, but if you don't know what axle you have, don't touch your gears. it is beyond diy, and most mechanics.

You'll have a tag on the rear diff in the upper left. It'll say (for sure) what gears you have.

3.07 = D35C

See if you have a rubber plug in the diff cover or a screw in one. Rubber will confirm a D35 rear.

Front will be a D30 (all the Non-Rubicon's have a D30 front).

Hope this helps.

No 30 in the rear. It'll be a 35 if you have 3.07 gears. MAYBE a 44 if you have 3.73's.

You'll have reason to change gears if you put bigger tires on. Go much bigger than 32 or 33 inch tires and you'll need to bullet proof that axle or swap it for something.

you got me thinkin if you think the rear looks like a 30, if the sides of the cover are straight, it may be a 44, but obviously you have the picture right there. d35 is round, d44 is not. and the rubber or metal fill plug is the simplest clue.

no prob man, and there goes my hope for you from my post above. oh well, your jeep is normal.

ryan's tj we just put a d44 in w/ 3.73 gears to replace his d35 w/ 3.07 gears, makes a big difference. i would not however spend money regearing a d35.

if you were closer to chicago there's a nice set of stock axles w/ 4.10 gears takin up some space in my garage.

So, if my husband brought my Sport up there next week, would you be interested in changing axles for him. He hates anything mechanical... I'd let you keep my 35/3.07's and at least buy you a case of beer!

So can you have a Dana 44 rear end in a TJ with drum brakes?

I noticed the Rubi's have rear disc brakes. Just wondering. I need to look again but I know I have a drum brake rear end.

Well don't feel bad I have the same set up, but from what I was told on my 04 Sport the Dana 44 axle was an option and I have rear drum brakes.

Well that is a pleasant surprise! After checking the above chart it looks like I have the Dana 44 rear end. Cool! I saw the screw in filler plug before but I wasn't 100% sure at the time. I had just assumed the Dana 30/35 set up.

I guess what I am asking is if I want to pick up a D44 by purchasing an older model Jeep, which model would I be looking for?
