4 HI let her fly! But seriously if it's snow I drive in 4 hi according to the road conditions. If there's snow on the roads I assure you I'm not traveling very fast.
Does it matter if you're in 4H but just using the front wheels? What I mean is that I'm trying to chase down a slight vibe I get around 60-65mph. I pulled the rear driveshaft out and put it in 4H and took her for a spin. The Jeep feels and sounds much different driving at 60mph with just the front wheels powering it than it does when when in regular 2WD and the rear wheels powering it.
I couldn't tell if the vibes disappeared with the rear driveshaft out because the Jeep had a completely different feel driving at that speed just using the front wheels. Is that safe or is it no different than doing that speed in RWD.
Just keep a good grip on the steering wheel. In front wheel drive mode, sharp acceleration or engine braking on uneven surfaces will make it want to dart.
It feels different because it's like driving a front wheel drive car now. You're just feeling the power come from the front instead of the rear. It will handle a bit different but should be safe to drive for the test. Me personally I wouldn't drive it that way as a long term solution but to test for vibs should be fine
I don't think he's asking for all the varied opinions of how fast you think he should be going in 4 hi based on conditions or being told that if you can go faster than 55 you don't need to be in 4hi.
The only correct answer is: You can go as fast as your vehicle will go. period.
I've driven up to 65mph. After that you can hear the driveline. Not bad sounds.. but you can begin to hear it. Would stay below 60 for a long period on slick roads. I was doing 65 in a snow covered highway with a limit of 65... still getting passed by people!!!
Any safe speed is fine for 4Hi. And yes being in 4x4 can indeed help you stop faster/steer better in an emergency maneuver since being in 4x4 can help prevent brake lockup.
Agree with any speed being safe, but meh on the rest. The impact isn't as dramatic as people would like to think, so I still think it's best to assume no impact when driving. People who haven't been out in the winter already think 4x4 makes them invincible, no need to reinforce it
Only time I've felt 4x4 pull in turns is when I'm going 35 mph sideways in a parking lot. Then stopping for us guys on these high void tires your distance is already increased, and once traction breaks there isn't much you can do.
