How much to expect to over pay for a TJ

Helping a friend with a jeep. There is a TJ, i would say good condition, 2000 140000, 4.0, auto, new top ($200 ebay special), good tires, $8900. KBB values it at $6K. I guess if you add the lift and good tires, you could say $6500.

The conventional thought behind buying a TJ is that you pay more than KBB. If so, How much more would you pay. I think $8900 is way too much. What do you think?

Expect no price increase for mods

Last TJ I bought was about 5 years ago

It is my 98 sport has ac and cruse and 5 SPd with factory D44

When new original owner did all these mods

4" rubicon express short arm (best lift on market in 98)

Adjustable rancho shocks

Fully bed lined interior

Quality rear armor with swing out carrier

4.56 gears front and rear with ARBs and York compressor on board air

Warn full size manual hubs all four wheels with warn full floater rear and warn rear disc conversion and 5 on 5.5 lug pattern

Terra four low (before any rubicon 4:1 case was available)

Super short SYE and Tom woods drive shaft

Full roll cage and tank skid and steering box skid

Half doors new sail cloth top best top sliders

Upgraded stereo and speakers

Centerline 15x8 alloy wheels

33x10 tires

Custom front and rear bumpers

Alarm

When I bought it no rust and under 40k miles

Inside Tub also rust free thanks to full bed lining when new

Not a dent or a scratch on the original body

I am sure original owner paid more for the mods then I did for the vehicle

After trying Craig's list and local jeep club(s) and eBay the owner was willing to negotiate and sold it to me for 10K

I have added a hard top full doors and swap to metal cloak track bars and control arms

There are many ways to price out a tj.... Generally 2003 and ups will be over 7k as long as they have under 180k miles. As for a 2000 tj assuming it's a 4.0 with under 150k miles would probably be worth around 6k now it also depends if it's rusty. And has no problems from a test drive and inspection. The last thing your friend wants to do is buy a tj that has many problems such as rust. Once rust starts it's not going to stop. Make sure 4wd works. Take the Jeep through all the gears if possible on a test drive.

I must have gotten ripped off big time if that's the case? I paid $12,000.00 for a totally stock 02 Sport with 39,000 miles on it a couple of years ago, it did look like it just rolled off the show room floor though. Prices vary huge depending on location, miles, condition, options, and to a extent mods.

Don't get too anxious about buying one. Deals come up every once in a while where someone will actually advertize one according to kbb. (Not knowing that they will bring more.

I bought my 1999 in 2011 with a 4.0L, 5 speed and hardtop completely stock and in excellent condition with 112k miles for $5300. It was from a college kid who wasn't in to jeeps, but it was just something to drive.

Be aware that the 4 cylinder jeeps will not bring close to what the 6 cylinder jeeps will.

Just sold a 2001 sport with 4.0, 5 speed, etc. Had new lift (DPG Ultimate), new tires, wheels, etc; lots of money in parts.

All that said, the outside looked like it had been wheeled a lot but no rust. I got $9500 for it after listing it a week before. TJ's are seeming to command a good price.

I paid $7300 for my 03 TJ in 2012 with 67000 on it, not in real nice shape. Right now, I'm looking for another one I can ship out and leave at my summer home in the Black Hills. Looked at a lot of them in the $8000-$10000 range. The one I like best is a 97 with 58000 miles, that is absolutely mint Florida car $7000.

Around here (Georgia ) they are selling kind of high. I've noticed that modded ones will be listed higher than stock ones. Dealers will negotiate on modded ones but will not budge on a nice stock one. I've also noticed the prices go up in the spring when the weather starts to turn nice.

Part of the inflated cost is based on the high value of many of the parts and the high demand

Price just these three in aftermarket
Hard top
Set of full doors
A D44 rear

Because so many TJs were sold without these there remains a high demand and price

Agreed. I'll add to that Dual tops, and a clean frame, a manual transmission, and air conditioning.

That is at least up here in New England. So many TJ's up here are rust buckets or are missing certain things that people really want to have to make the TJ more comfortable(A/C for hot rainy days).

I paid $500-800 over book price for mine and overlooked a lot of minor issues because I knew I could fix it and I found a yellow 4L 5sp with a D44 and a spotless frame. I also walked away from an equally priced one that was in better shape for the sole reason it didn't have A/C.

Had to put another $1000 in parts into it including a hard top but I have no doubt I can sell it in a heartbeat

Bought this Summer

In Chicagoland; 1999 Sahara, 4.0, auto, 139XXX, soft top and half doors only, 4inch lift with 33s on Mickey Thompson wheels, diamond plate judiciously, very clean with amazing interior, did need to repair hole in passenger front fender (fiberglass/fill/paint) for $7200. Happily it sailed through emissions...always a nervous moment first time used vehicle...
