How noisy is your 2.5 engine

Just wondering how noisy is noisy
Had a 85 4.2 that always sounded like it had a knock
now I have a 97 2.5 that sounds noisy. not bad but knocky at idle.. but fine when driving.. Great oil pressure. burns no oil.. runs great just always a noise engine.. how does your engine sound from 1 to 10 10 being noisy- 1 being super silent ?

thanks
P. Scott

Hard to tell over the exhaust rattle/leaks at the collector!

Engine noise...probably a 4.

My 2.5 is like standing next to a jet engine compared to the 24V VR6 in my GTI. I think it's just a noisy engine. It runs great though, even with 186k miles. Doesn't burn any oil. Have an exhaust leak at the manifold though. My own fault, should have replaced the manifold bolts/studs when I replaced the manifold. Snapped one when torquing them back down. Still haven't extracted the broken stud from the block.

Noise is subjective. It's depends on what someone's point of reference is? The 2.5 is definitely much more noisy then a modern engine. Tractor like in my opinion. My other cars are much newer. I would give my 2.5 a 8-9.

I will say this though. Much of the noise is not the actual engine itself. My engine has 160K miles, uses no oil, has great compression. My old distributor made a knocking noise from a bad bushing. It sounded like a timing chain slap, mild engine knock or rocker noise. The knocking engine noise went way down when I replaced the distributor. It actually disappeared. After that I checked for noise with a engine stethoscope. The head and block sounded very smooth and quiet, no knocking or any weird noises anywhere. There was noise was from other accessories. The EGR pump clicks, the injectors tick, drive belt and pulleys make noise, fan whirl.

Id say about a 2 only has about 20k on it

Now on the other hand the engine that I replaced had 215k and was a 10. It had a broken piston skirt and knocked like crazy for about 40k.
Other than the scratches from the broken piston skirt that engine look like it was brand new when I torethe it apart....

Good to know about the distributer. I'll have to check it since what you described is what I hear. Sounds like the timing chain rattling.

Mine whines a little, but it might just be clutch related. I just turn up the music a little louder.

My 2.5 just turned 160k and only noise from under the hood is the exhaust leak, flange from manifold to pipe didnt seal correctly (it was starting to rain on me during last steps of install)
My radios always blaring, my brakes squeel, my doors whine, and everything rattles but no real bothersome engine noise LOL
