I have a 1996 jeep wrangler that was made in March of 1996. Everything I read says there is no such thing. Can someone please help.

That thing is really rare. I bet it's worth at least $100,000.

Yep, while it was made in '96, it is still an official '97 model. Jeep never made an actual 1996 model year Wrangler. The anticipated 1996 Wrangler TJ had manufacturing problems so its introduction was delayed. Jeep kept making the '95 Wrangler YJ into early 1996 until the new Wrangler TJ was finally introduced as an early release 1997 Wrangler TJ.

My '97 Wrangler TJ I purchased 5/96 was manufactured 3/96.

My '97 TJ was stolen last year so I can't look but yeah it had a different grill arrangement... pretty sure it had 3 grills on top, only two of which I think were actually functional.

Yup there is no such thing as a 1996 jeep wrangler. But they were made in 1996 and sold as 1997.

Some YJs were still being made in very early 1996 and sold as a 1995 YJ.

All cars, trucks etc are built the year before and are released on to the market usually around 3 months or so before the end of the year. So, you actually get a 97 in late 96... Keep in mind that the product has to be made before the year it comes out... If manufacturing had started in 97, then you prob wouldn't have got it til 98...

I was thinking there was an instance of a 96 TJ Wrangler on here before...but it was a foreign model or something like that. Mexico maybe?

Can anyone confirm? But yeah, as far as the OP's question is concerned...it's a 97.

My 97 has 3 grills. It's build date is 6/11/97, oh so close to a 98. It also has the TJ sticker instead of the Wrangler. It was built for Canada.

GM did the same thing with the Corvette. There were no 1983 Corvettes.

Yah, but with the Corvette they actually skipped a year of making (53-82, 84-present) them and thats why Mustang is the longest running production car (65 i think-present) on the road today... Jeep didn't skip a year...

No, as mentioned earlier the new model year typically sees production mid year of the year prior to the model year.. ie 95 model year would've started production in july or august of 94.. they planned a change from the yj to the tj but had delays.. it may have been planned to have the tj start as a 96 model year but due to delays they skipped that model year and started production very early in 96 for the 97 model year

No, the '95 Wrangler was an entirely different model called the YJ that had a leaf spring suspension and square headlights. Your Jeep was born as a TJ.

Actually, the Mustang was introduced as a 1965 model on April 17, 1964. Enthusiasts like me though consider the April-August 1964 built models as 64 1/2 Models as they had a generator system and a few other difference that delineate them from "regular" 1965 models (former owner of a 65 Fastback myself).

So what Jeep did by naming it's early 96 built Jeeps as 97s isn't all that unusual but technically they did skip a "year".
