How tight should lug nuts on spare be?

Did some forum searching, but didn't find the answer to my question.

So my spare on the back has (3) lug nuts, and the more I tighten them, the back side of the tire pushes and deflects around the tire bump stops. I don't want to overtighten them to the point where I'm damaging the tire so I don't know how tight to go.

What I've done so far is to tighten all (3) by hand (equally), then a few turns more with a socket and check them once in awhile. Sound adequate? What are the rest of you doing?

Thanks!
