How to check CEL with Key

I have a 98 TJ and I have a code reader, but I've been too busy to dig it out, and its usually been the same code tripping every few days. I've been trying to do the ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON thing with the key to check the codes, but it doesn't seem to work.

Is this something that only works on the newer TJs with the security key?
If not, do I have to go all the way back to locked-off or just unlocked-off?
Do I have to have the key in the on position for a certain amount of time before I switch it back to off for the next cycle?

End with the key in the on position. It doesn't happen immediately either, give a few seconds. I was ready to give up when the code popped up on my 05 TJ!

If yours is a late model-98 I bet you it won't work. For some reason late-98s to 99 doesn't have this feature it sucks, but I've tried it over and over and over with no success. Run to AutoZone or Advance Auto, they'll do it for free.

I'm not supprised... I have a code scanner, I've just been too busy to dig It out. I figured if It was a simple 10 second deal, and its the same one ive been getting for the past month now, then nothing to worry about... Yet..

Yeah, I agree with the above... some years it wasn't offered...no idea why.

I keep getting a stupid P0456...small evap leak...on mine. Got it to stay cleared for about 3 days and then it came back. Guess I'll go borrow my buddy's smoke tester and see if it's just a bad gas cap or if I got a cracked line.
