Soap & water on a cool engine. I even spray it down afterwards with Simple Green or Pine Sol.

i just use a normal garden hose, and put a rag in the air intake just to make sure no water gets in there.

I was thinking of cleaning mine off today at the car wash. Considering that you can put a snorkel on these things and take them underwater, I wouldn't think that it would hurt it. At least that's what my rationale is.

ok thanks guys, but speaking of water in the intake my friends went under bridge in his wrangler and the water was only about 2ft deep and when we left it sounded like he got water in his motor or something , how would it get in? the only thing touching the water besides his tires was maybe his exhaust pipe and if so for breif seconds.

Try to avoid as much electrical stuff as you can.

I spray the engine with a de-greaser. Scrub it with a rag and hose it down. Make sure the engine is cold and stay away from electrical parts/sensors.

simple green..uncut, seems to work pretty well for me. I just spray it down, let it sit for a few, then hose it off.

The engine does not have to be cool. With the engine hot/warm, the grease and grime is looser. Water on the alt is not going to hurt it. I have been washing engine for man years on several vehicles and never had an issue hosing it down. The only time I have had problens was using a pressure washer which will blast water into things. Garden hose is fine. Simple Green is great. (I just washed my Durango engine last week)

i spray some "Marine Clean" or "Simple Green" on everything, let it sit for a few mins and work it's magic, and then hose it off. i always, like everyone agrees, stay away from the alternator.

Simple, I have been doing it for years with no problems:

Make sure engine is cold,
Get a Gunk engine degreaser, spray the $%*#@ out of the engine and greasy spots, empty the whole can,
wait about 15 minutes,
Hose it down with water
wipe the engine dry with towel or etc
wd40 the engine (mostly moving metal parts, bolts, nuts) and wipe it again so wd40 wont collect dirt and dust,

Engine should be shiny and clean.
Good luck

It looks like the name is "awesome", but mine looks like that after what I said above....
Also I would never trust a dollar store to clean my jeep, what if in the long run, hoses dry out, or weird chemical in it...... Gunk is designed for engine cleaning.

like stated above, i've used the rest of my marine clean from POR15, its a degreaser and after 15mins gets everything off. best thing about it is you pay maybe $15 for it at a carquest but you can dilute it to probably 10:1. so it lasts a while.
