So I've got these tube bumpers on the front and rear of my car that I can't stand and are starting to rust. I need to know how I can go about painting them flat black and have 'em last for a good year or two.
There's a pic of 'em.
I was thinking this process, but I've also started reading into needing muariatic acid to break down the chrome, and if that's true, then these will have to stay.
1. 120 grit sandpaper
2. clean off with acetone, twice,
3. 1st layer primer
4. 400 grit
5. 2nd layer primer
6. wetsand 800 gritt
7. 1st layer Rustoleum flat black
8. 1200 grit
9. 2nd layer
10. 1200 grit
11. 3rd layer
12. 1200 grit
13. clear coat (2 layers)
14. 1600 grit, 1800 grit, then 2000 grit
Then buff it out from there.
the reason for so many layers is that I plan on spraying really lighty rather then going heavy.
Let me know if I'm doing something wrong, some suggestions, etc. The bumper will be taken off and hung in my basement which will have blankets and everything laid so it's not dusty.
