How to take the doors off a 2003 Wrangler

How do the doors come off a 2003 Wrangler? I took the nut off the bottom of the hinge bolts and thought the door would just lift off, but it won't budge.

Work the door back and forth and try lifting harder.

Open the window and have the door open to 90 degrees then stick one arm through the window and grab the door on the bottom edge and just keep pulling it up and letting it go.

it always helps to spray some pb blaster on the studs. then swing the door back and forth while applying some upward pressure. once the door is off put some grease in the holes and on the studs. it gets easier the moor the doors get put on and taken off.

Spray some PB Blaster and work the doors back n forth while lifting off.
If that doesn't work and if you have a hi-lift jack wrap the lift part witha towel and use it to put pressure on the bolt. jack it up a little or enough to apply pressure and lift door off. I've done that with mine especially after long winter and salty roads

Wow man, you've got 107 posts on this forum and you still don't know how to get the doors off??! That's the first and foremost thing a jeep owner usually figures out how to do. First you go to your local auto parts store then once you've bought your first tool kit try fitting a few of those wrenches to the nuts on the bottom of your door hinge...Once you've found one that fits go ahead and remove those nuts...lift the door off...be careful not to blow one of those AZZ gaskets as you set the door down on the floor and then hit the mud and get it dirty!! lol

i had to put the nuts part of the way back on and beat them with a 2x4 and hammer... i was lifting the jeep up about 2+ inches when lifting and moving the doors back and forth, it was sitting at the car lot for about 8 months, then i bought it half way through winter... they were stuck.

Sorry to hear that! Try spraying penetrating oil on the top part of the hinge and letting it sit overnight. Then turn the door upside down and hopefully you can use a hammer and punch and get it out. Also, try some vice grips on the head of the bolt and see if you can twist it to loosen it up.

I got mine off by spraying penetrating oil (Liquid Wrench) in the bottom part of the hinge like a couple people suggested and letting it sit overnight, then put the nuts back on part way like crazyredneck suggested and hammered them loose. Then it came right off and I managed to not drop it. Thanks for all your help (from most of you anyway, except for a couple of goofs who babble like 2-year olds).

Now I have another question. Is there a dome light override switch? I can't find one. What do you guys do to keep the dome light from staying on? Do I need to add a switch?

If you take out your glove box, there is a fuse that is made for the dome light switch it will also disable the headlight alarm. Just pull the fuse.

Thanks, that sounds much easier than wiring in a switch.

i had the switch that they make. it is not difficult to install, but it just didn't work right all of the time. plus you can save the $50 that it costs and buy something more useful.

The nut is 1/2", but with the paint on it a 13MM fits slightly better. I just used an end wrench.

a little forum humor I believe-it would be the first time I ever heard of a Jeep that the doors come off-I know a guy with a CHEROKEE and his doors are always off-as well as the hood, fenders and non needed parts for off road.

Seriously pretty sure your doors come off if you have a wrangler. But may want to try some of the tips/tricks to loosen the pins before the first time.

Good Luck!

I have a 2003 rubicon wrangler and it came with solid and half doors...dealership said it belonged to a salesman...I doubt that, other things weren't stock on it either but the doors slide on and off any time I want to switch them over.
I'm one of 'those' that doesn't recommend running without doors ever, on or off road...it's a safety issue! Get a set of half doors if you must-don't take chances.
If you really can't get the doors off, you might have a 'bent' bolt...take it to your dealer and let them remove the doors for you and grease the bolt/pin...then if something is bent they'll straighten it out for you.

After 2 years I hope he already got his doors off, and WS6Vert hasn't been active for a year. Trick to getting doors off is lifting as close to the hinges as possible and wiggle the door back and forth. I roll the window down, put one hand under the door, the other on the top of the door. Then I lift straight up while my wife turns the door back and forth. usually have both off in around 5 minutes. Thats including taking the nuts off.

Its about as funny as the thread the other day about not having the right gas and the jeep won't start. Hanging around the forums does have its humorous moments
