The Jeep I just bought has Rugged Ridge rock sliders, but the PO was going to repaint them so they're just primed right now. I was thinking of using Rustoleum Bed liner. But I'm worried how it's going to hold up. I can't imagine that it would be as good as Line-x just because its not as thick. What's your guys thoughts?
Patrick nailed it. Definitely tougher then regular spray paint.
I'd be leery to put it on sliders if they have the tube/step. I used it on my front bumper and against limbs and random little hits it holds up well. However I've chipped it easily by stepping on it. I stood on my bumper to lean up under the hood and knocked a chunk out. So if your gonna step on it, it won't last long.
When I swap out to some new sliders, I personally am considering powder coat.
That being said, the nice part is, bust out the can and touch it up in less then 5 minutes.
Thanks for the replies. I think I might give it a shot anyways just because its only $7 a can and they're just primed anyways. I'll put on a few coats to maybe try and thicken it up. Does anyone know how hard it is to remove if it doesn't work out?
Well the Rustoleum only lasted a day. I used four cans on the rock sliders. I would coat them real good then let them set for 24 hrs or more then recoat (took 3 days). Then I let them cure for about 4 days in a room at 70 degrees. I really like the finish, I just wish it would have lasted longer. Going to try to find someone in my area that powder coats.
I sand blasted them since they were just primed and a little rusty. Once I was done blasting I hit them with sand paper to rough them up a little. Then I cleaned with mineral spirits let them dry then started painting. I thought about priming but I didn't have any and the can said it's not necessary.
Mineral spirits was maybe the issue. It's basically an oil type product. Try a small spot and use denatured alcohol to clean. Use a primer that's rust inhibitive no matter what. Try that and let it dry for 3 days in the hot sun. Paint and cold weather don't mix.
Hate to say this but by the looks of the dent, I don't think much will hold up to that kind of impact. If you are going to beat it, be prepared to redo it. The cheaper way the better because you don't want to have to go through prep to powder coat every time you hit it.
How hard are they to remove, and do you have easy access or own a sand blaster? Seriously, if you do (if I did) I'd remove them, sand blast again, and wipe them down with something else. Self-etching primer isn't a bad idea, either.
But I'm picky, and am never satisfied until I'm satisfied IYKWIM.
Thanks for the help. There is no dent there is just a big piece missing (should have got a little closer with the camera). The only thing that caused all of that is gravel. The roads have been kind of crappy lately cause its been warm and the frost is starting to come up. There not to bad to take off so I'll probably pull them off and reblast them. Will paint thinner work to wipe them down with before I prime and paint this time? Am I waisting my time with rustoleum? I thought about having them line-x'd. Would that be a better way to go? I doubt I'll ever be climbing over rocks since there isn't really anything like that around me.
I had my old sliders Line-xed. They held up well to some moderate hits and slides. Actually the Line-X was tougher then the actual slider as the wheeling I'm stepping up to I was worried about screwing them up.
My new Savvy sliders are painted even though I could have Line-Xed them for free ( perks of the job ), the paint comes off pretty easily but 5 seconds with a spray can and they are as good as new. I wouldn't waste my $$$ powdercoating as it isn't much tougher. My bumper came with supposedly the best powdercoating and it's all scraped off with ease.
IMO if you aren't sliding and crashing into rocks all the time and want something tougher then powdercoating then Line-X is the way to go. If you abuse Line-X on the rocks too much then yes it will peel. Once you start to peel it you have to strip the entire thing in order to respray it, and yes that will cost more money. I know a guy who wheels his Jeep at the hammers and he had all his armor Line-xed. He scraped all of it off and got it redone.
Here's my old sliders with Line-X premium. There were several instances where the entire weight of the Jeep was on it and sliding with no peeling. You still will have scratch marks that aren't repairable like shown in the picture.
