Hybrid/Electric TJ?

Has anyone heard any news regarding new technologies or retrofits?

I know the military has some really cool hybrid/electric HUMVEE prototypes. In one model, the engine and drive train has been replaced by 4 independent electric motors operating at each wheel. At a standstill you can rotate the vehicle 180 degrees by putting two wheels forward and two in reverse. Pretty cool. And the acceleration and torque numbers are way ahead of standard HUMVEE's.

Personally I think America's one true sports car, the Jeep, so said Alberto Ferrari, would be a prime candidate for new technologies.

I haven't heard of any but i think if they could keep the jeep with solid axles and not effect its off-road performance too much and make it hybrid people would buy them who normally wouldn't buy a hybrid. Hell i wouldn't mind driving a hybrid wrangler. I think the major concern though is where the hell are you going to put batteries large enough on a wrangler even the new 4 doors don really have a place for such a large battery grouping.

The EV above is cool but its only rear wheel drive..to me that kind of defeats the purpose of a wrangler.

I think in terms of off-road vehicles, the military is going to drive electric/hybrid technologies. For them it comes down to logistics. I think it costs over $200 to get a single gallon of gas/diesel to a forward operating unit. You can't sustain operations at that cost...

The electric/hybrid Jeep Wrangler is on the way...I hope.

Watch "TARDEC Hybrid Electric Humvee" Video at Engineering Videos - Engineering TV

This video is 4 years old. I've got to believe superior technologies are emerging.

I work in a open pit coal mine. We have diesel-electric240 and 400 ton (pay load) haul trucks. They suck! In soft conditions, they fault out (Stop going), rain/snow they will fault out. usually the quickest fix, and big joke is "cycle the master switch". That means shutting down the engine, then turning the master switch off, that kills all power to the computers, takes about 60 seconds, then go through the start-up procedure, which takes 3 - 5 minutes.

The use of electric hybred in military vehicles would be a serios incident waiting to happen!

There is a company that or is coming out with an electric motor for the 4 door JK that mounts in place of the rear driveshaft to turn it into a hybrid of sorts. Can't remember the name of the company though.

Edit:

Found the article where I first read about it:http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticl...ner/index.html

It's a company called Xtreme Power based in Texas.

The point of the military hybrid is increased performance, not fuel economy. More torque to each wheel, more contorl of each wheel, and possibly less machinery under the vehicle.

Why isn't this being produced in production vehicles and as aftermarket upgrades. I've been talking about this idea for the last 12 years!
