Hydraulic steering

Is anyone running the hydraulic assisted steering on an 04 or newer TJ that is their daily driver? I am curious due to the fact that I have been thinking about upgrading my steering because my steering gear main bearing is shot, and since it is a Mecedes Benz box it is uber expensive to replace. What brand are ya'll running, likes dislikes?

You are going to have to replace the box no matter what you do.

PSC makes a Saginaw box that bolts right in for the Merc units... or you can cut out the one bolt and weld in a new mounting point for the other Saginaw boxes that came on TJ/XJ/MJ/Durango's etc.

Or you can get this one, that is tapped for assist... if you decide to go that way in the future.

Nice!!! I was looking at PSC's extreme duty assist kit, I am sure it would be fine for on and off road.

2003-2006. Don't get the idea that just because they're made by Mercedes they're good. They're no better than the early model TJ Saginaw boxes.

So my 06 has a mercedes steering box in it??? I find that hard to believe the they would produce a steering box that is identical to the saginaw unit. Mine as far as I know is a Saginaw .... It's the same as all mopar units.

03-06 should be the Mercedes box. Google a bit and you'll find that same info everywhere. Research the popular Durango mod and see if it will work for your year.

This is pretty standard knowledge in the Jeep world.....in 03, they switched to a Mercedes-sourced box, which differs internally and in its bolt pattern from the Sag boxes. You don't have a Saginaw box unless the previous owner of your Jeep changed the bolt boss location at the frame and swapped one in.

Also check out ARG's Super Box

There is also a company that takes your stock box rebuilds it and taps it for hydro assist. It's called the Redneck Ram by West Texas Offroad. Rebuild and tap will cost 265. Hydro kit with rebuild, ram, hoses, and weld on tabs is 500. Kit with upgraded pump is 700. The only thing is that you will be out a jeep till they finish. Or find a junkyard one to send. Check pamsauto.com, got my 136amp alternator for 40 bucks.
