Yes, I have been to the mountain top. I have myth-busted. Sure "they" always claimed my Jeep has a 19 gal tank on my build sheet but I was not a believer. But yea, I have seen the urban legend with my own eyes and it is no longer a rumor. Yes, I have gone where no Jeeper has gone before (hmmm...okay maybe not).
For purposes of stress and blood pressure mgmt, please do not try this at home...:zap:
(drum roll)
Yes folks, I got a full 19 gals of gas into my TJ's "19 gal tank" this morning!unk: I've never gotten more than 15.5 gals, ever.
And man lemme tell ya - you gotta let that needle go WAY, WAY, past the red-zone. I mean the low fuel light/ding came on 1/2 into my 40 miles commute to work. Initially I was just running late and didn't want to stop, but it soon became a test of wills. So I proceeded. And then from work back home 40 miles, then into town about 7 miles, then back to the house 7 miles, then back to town 7 miles this morning when I filled up. Sort of like the Seinfeld episode with Kramer on the test drive. I'm guessing I had about 10 feet left before it ran dry.
When I was in auto tech school, the teacher said that vehicle manufacturers "idiot proof" the fuel system. So when the tank reads empty, there will still be about 3-4 gallons of gas left in the system.
Sweet, just out of curiosity do you know how far you went on that tank mileage wise?? I had a friend who took a five gallon gas can with him the first day he got his new tahoe. He filled it up and drove around for a couple days until it ran out of gas. He said the light turned on, drove 25 miles past that and it dinged, another 25 miles and it dinged some more, then he drove another 15 miles and it finally died. Sort of proves what marc1kim said...
The warning light came on at 204 miles. I drove approx 75 more miles. I had been told there is only about 35 miles left after the ding, so I was pretty nervous for the last 30.
I basically get 150 miles on the 15 galons before the empty indicator annuniciates. Basically, I figure 200 per tank, but I drive around town a lot and I have a lead foot.
150? Well I used to soft pedal it with it being a stick so never racked up the rpms too high in a stupid attempt to be easy on the gas. Well, my last two tanks I tried a new theory - I'm running every gear to about 2800-3000 before shift (the rig seems to like that better too). I've gotten noticely better mpg. I guess I'm allowing the engine to work more efficiently and therefore putting less foot in it. Seems to be working.
isnt it 19.5 gal.. I tried this on my pankin new moto once and i got stranded on the road and had to call my GF. She was pissed of how stupid I was.. I just wanted to make it to the cheveron station.. I did not want to pour rotton robbie on a new bike.
That's good news. I've pushed the needle a few times on mine. I basically get 150 miles on the 15 galons before the empty indicator annuniciates. Basically, I figure 200 per tank, but I drive around town a lot and I have a lead foot.
The downside to that test is it makes the fuel pump run hot, gas that cycles thru the pump all the time keeps it cool, might get a way with it a couple of times but it for sure shortens the life of the pump.
yah.. the gas tank only registers 15 gallons.. but they left extra room in the gas tank so if your offroad and your gas light comes on.. you actually wont run out of gas as quick as you think.. ive ran my jeep with the gaslight on for like 3-4 days straight and probably put about 70 miles on it.. and every time i fill up.. i put atleast 17 gallons in
The really hilarios part about all this is I have NEVER seen an accurate jeep gas gauge no matter what jeep it's in. All four of my jeeps lie worse than politicians about how much gas they have.
my gas gauge is really slow it takes a couple minutes to show its full after filling up. i was in a 2003 chevy truck and the low fuel ding chirped and then went 5 miles and died.
