I have aTJ Rubi Thinking of picking up a YJ tomorrow to play with

I got a guy to come down to 2700 for a nice 89 YJ. It has a newly rebuilt engine, auto tranny, spring over lift, hard top, and on 35 mts. I can sink my Rubi to the door handles and I plow right thru. I never had a YJ, Is this gonna be a good jeep to mud with. What axels are under it D30 or D35. Whatcha think

4 or 6 cyl?

Should have a HPD30 in the front and a D35 rear.

Vacuum 4x4 still hooked up?

Same here. i Own 4 Wranglers (89, 97, 99, 06) total right now but I really like my 89. I have owned it since 1994. Solid machine, very few problems. It has a 2.5" Rubicon Express lift, SYE, custom rear CV joint drive shaft, stock Rubicon tires and wheels, nice Sony, aluminum radiator, mean green alternator, and a Black Mountain winch. Great Jeep, I love it. The ride is certainly different than a TJ. More harsh over tough terrain and it is not as peppy as my TJ's. I still have the vacuum actuated 4wd and the Carter carb everyone hates. I am on my second carb but have found the secret to keeping it running good.

The YJ's are very similar strength and reliability to non Rubi TJ's. The obvious difference is the leaf springs and carbureted I6. As stated the have the HPD30 that is a stronger ring & pinion to TJ d30's. But might have a vacuum disconnect. They are known to fail or stick. They also have the smaller U-Joints in the shafts, but the TJ's are interchangable(except the hubs unless you put on newer rotors too.) On that note the knuckles out are interchangeable. Drop pitman arms can be used on YJ's where they are bad for TJ's.

If your going to be mudding. You could build that YJ into a beast. Leaf spring axles are much easier to swap. I wouldn't take that D35 with 35's out mudding. Grab a d60 and throw it under there. All you need are the two spring perches and shock mounts. Then you could pound on it all day.

Would also suggest you post in the YJ forum so they can tell you exactly what to look for.

For that you would need some V8 power and 2.5t rockwells. Or was that a joke?

I see lots of YJs here for $2000-3000, many of them low (under 120k) mileage.
