I know I'm a noob....but

for the life of me I've had gas back up on me down the side of the LJ the few times I have filled it. I live in Mass, but driving it back from PA from the point of purchase, it did it the 2-3 times I filled it. Is there a trick or an easy way or do I have to calculate how many gallons it going to take and slowly put it in at the end?......I realize that I am opening myself up for a bunch of wisecracks......so go ahead. A few serious ones to offset the shots. TIA

There is a mod that involves replacing the TJ filler tube with one from a Chevy. Search and you will find the write-up.

Here is the write-up

I had the same problem. There's something strange about the TJ gas tank, but hell if I know what it is. I find that if I insert the nozzle too far, it shuts off after one second, but if it's too far out, it pours out. I found a "sweet spot" where the nozzle is out a little farther than I would put it in any other car. I don't know how else to describe it, but you'll just need to try it for yourself. I haven't had a problem since I found out that spot. Good luck

Thanks I'll look for the write up on the mod, but BlackBetty's sweet spot idea might be worth some checking out....I mean I drive an LJ, that means I will get a lot of opportunities to check the theory out!!!

I have the same problem. I just use the slower of the two settings. No more gas spraying out of the filter neck.

If you have a body lift on it, it will kink the hose that runs from the gas input (dont know the technical term) to the tank. If you look behind the plastic panel where your drivers side rear wheel is you can see the hose. A longer one would help if it is kinked. 1" body lift on my TJ and I replaced the original one with a longer one, no problems since.

Exactly, I understand that there is a way to fix this but if I am in such a hurry that I do not have the time to fill up my gas tank a little slower then that is my own dang fault. LOL
