I Need Assistance! Soft Top Gap

Hi all,

New to the forum and just bought my first wrangler a week ago. I bought a 99 Wrangler Sahara with half doors. Hard doors on the bottom and the top has tan cloth and hard windows.

It came with a soft top but for some reason, there is a gap between the top half of my half doors cloth (the tan soft top w/ hard windows) and the rest of the soft top (from the rear). The gap is about an inch and a half thick on both the driver side and passenger side, and I have no idea what is wrong with it. Any advice on how to fix this?

Let me know if I need to post some pictures of it.

Thanks so much folks!

Solution: Get a hard top.
Welcome to the world of soft tops my friend. Be prepared to be assulted by wind, rain, snow, and (if you're a mud lover) plenty of mud through that gap. If there is a solution, I do not know it.

Any pics? Is the gap something that you can see out of sitting inside the Jeep? Are the door surrounds installed?

Cheaper solution: Duck tape.
Might make it difficult to get out... but who really needs to leave their Jeep anyway?

Sounds like you are missing the door surrounds.
They are hard plastic (foldable) frames which bolt to the roll bar.
The soft top has 'drip rail retainers' above the doors which snap very securely into the door surrounds and the top half of your doors press firmly against it

EDIT - I gotta get faster at posting - everyone beat me to it

Use photobucket.com and post the IMG link. It sounds like you don't have the door surrounds. But you may only need to adjust the uppers some. You can put your knee on the bottom and pull the uppers in really hard to bend them to seal.

This is what you need and you can purchase them at any place that sells Jeep stuff. 4WheelParts, Quadratec, even the dealership can order them.

Oops, that picture includes the tailgate bar. Ignore the lower section of that pic.

The Sahara should have them if you have the top? If purchased from an individual contact them for the parts?
If no luck there then you'll have to fork up some $$$...

Looks like its the door surrounds problem! Thanks so much for your quick assistance everyone.

You guys rock. The surrounds did not come with the vehicle when I purchased it. Do the surrounds come in tan to match my top, or only in black? Do you even see them once they are installed, how do I avoid hiding the black?

Thanks in advance!

My 97 TJ originally had a tan top and the surrounds are black - actually kinda grey now (a bit like the driver).
Never seen tan surrounds.
Can't see the door surrounds when the full top is on - but can see it if you take the rear side windows out (or the half door soft uppers).

You don't mention it, but should probably check you have the tailgate bar and brackets as well - as per the pic in JDs post.
If there's a gap between the soft-top and the tailgate, means the bar is missing - OR the bar is installed upside-down.

the door surrounds only came in black color. If you want to hide them without thee top, it impossible, you must remove them if you dont like the look.

You will barely see them. The side windows will pull stretched forward to clip into them. The closed door will cover the rest except for what is visible around the edge.

Where's the best place to buy these surrounds? Craigslist seems to rarely have the right model. Is it Ebay? A Jeep Dealer? Anywhere else? Im in southern cal.

RockRiders --- New & Used Jeep Parts and Accessories Page 1 of 2

Click "auction", they have many new and used.

On my 06' it had a gap from the lower part of the door to the top where the door met the windshield frame......the roll bar has an adjustable bolt/slot where it attaches the main hoop bar. I actually had to open ( grind) the slot on the drivers side about 3/16 to make the gap even on the doors. Now it seals water tight.

So I had the same gap between my soft quarter windows and my full door....does anyone know where I can buy just these drip rails and how much they run? Thanks.

Nevermind! I just spoke with the guy I bought it from and he has them! He simply forgot to give them to me and I am going to pick them up tomorrow. Yay, thank goodness! Life is good again!
