Any motor will work. How much do you want to spend and how are your fab skills?

Cheapest/easiest way is almost always to replace the engine with "new" same engine or rebuild existing engine.

Replace whats in there, this is based on your asking the question to begin with, depending on your skills you can:
Pull and rebuild what you have with all new internal parts, thats if the block and head are good.
Pull and replace with a locally rebuilt
Pull and replace with a commercially rebuilt like Jasper.
Take it to your mechanic and have him/her put a new one in from the dealer or from a reputable rebuilder.
I had a jasper put in my 98XJ, 4.0L 6, cost me about $2500 installed. Got 7 year 70,000 mi warranty and if it blows up on the road all I need to do is find a jasper dealer/installer and it's covered. Friend of mine had his done here in Pa, blew 4 days later on his way to disneyworld, they swapped in a new one while they were there.

Id call that a good reason to find a small block and put it in there but thats just me. If you want the easy route than just put another 4 banger in there.

I'm having a hell of a time finding another 4cyl. I can't find any in Mi. and to rebuild mine my mechanic told me I would be looking at around 2 grand that's a bit much for a motor that has no balls. I found a 6cyl. for it but now gotta find out if the tranny will mount up to mine

No, your AX5 tranny will not work with a 4.0L, well, not for long anyway, neither will your harness, ecu or some other stuff. Converting it to a 350V8 would be easier.

I've got the other harness for the 6cyl. would it make a difference with the tranny being a stick or auto. mine is a stick? yeah I would like to switch to a 350 v8 but it's gotta be a daily driver to work so gotta think about mpg also

A Cummins 4bt will cost over 3k for a well used engine.

I know. Been looking for one for a while now.

Get a 5.3 or 4.8 v8 GM engine out of a wreck. Use the 4l60e transmission too. Transplant the computer too. Adapt you transfer case if you like.

You def get better mileage than you did before.

Agreed,,,, Also,, the cummins requires a 4" lift, gears changed to 3:07s, heavy transmission, etc etc,,, equals, monster jeep.. The small block Chevy LS1 is a much easier swap.. and you will get better MPGs,, 17 to 21....
