I4 compared to I6

Alright so me and my dad have a debate going on. Hes saying that a I4 will get better gas mileage then a I6 while and lifted ect. So if you can, can you post what you get average and your thoughts know it. I want the I6.

This has been discussed a million times and they are actually pretty equal when geared correctly and speedo adjusted properly for the given tire diameter. The I4 just sucks for highway driving.

I get 17-19 in town with I6 3.73s 5spd and 31BFg's on OME lift. From what I have seen that is really good...but I am an old man and drive slow....wherever I am going will be there when I get there.

I've read about V-8 conversions that get better mileage than the I-4. I haven't checked mine lately, probably 15MPG or less. Good luck

MPG should never be a reason to by the I4 over the I6. The four banger is just cheaper.

Sorry I left out highway and it REALLY!!, REALLY!! matters speed on highway.

If I am on interstate running 75-80mph I get about 16mpg.

If I am on a 2 lane 55mph with a head wind about 20mpg.

If I am on a 2 lane 55mph no head wind 21-22mpg.

If I have a tail wind long enough (only ever happened one time) I got 24mpg at 55mph

I do a lot 55mph i will save the fuel for the trail....

Our I6 is about the same as my sisters I4.....on the highway is where you'll really notice the difference. The I4 takes work to keep it at speed.

Damn! Lucky. I have an I4 with 4" lift, 33x12.50s, and stock 4.11 gears. I'm gettin about 15-16, but on the highway, I don't think it's any more than about 13...

The 2.5 I-4 really needs the performance mods to keep up with traffic. Header, high flow muffler, intake, etc... Aluminum rims make a big difference in power too. I get around 350 miles to the tank , with 30's, stock gearing, and performance mods.

What is considered a "high flow" muffler?

I've hit 19 MPG in my I6. I previously owned a 4banger, and I traded up for the 6. It's so meager on the highway that most gas saving a lost due to the fact that you have to keep your foot mashed to the floor.

Alright. And I know this is another highly discussed topic but what about the power? Is it that much of a difference? Would it be bad for z highschooler to have more power from the I6?

It's not like the I6 is a high performance motor, So I don't think the 6 cylinder would be bad for a high schooler. The extra power that the motor has just makes it so it doesn't have to work as hard to keep a steady speed at highway speeds

Is the torque about the same in both? Cuz the I4 has a lot of torque for what it is

I do everything in my 98 I4 that my gf does in her 00 I6 and get about the same results with the exception of highway speeds. I do about 65 fairly easy where as she can cruise around 80.

I have had both the 2.5 and two of the 4.0 motors in my three Wranglers and I would NEVER get the 4 cyl again. From my personal experience, I got the same exact gas mileage from my 2.5 to my first 4.0, about 17. Both of those were basically stock. Power difference was very noticeable when going up hills or trying to pass on the highway. The I6 is so much stronger than the 4 and if you shop around you won't necessarily end up paying a premium for an I6 equipped model if you negotiate well and buy it at a good price. In my opinion and having owned both, there are plenty of advantages to purchasing the 6, and none in favor of the 4.
