Ideal backspacing for wheel

I plan on buying new wheels and tires for my 2001 TJ which is stock. I do not want to do any modifications to it. I HAVE searched this forum and Google for a couple hours but the more I look the more different information I find.

From what I've found, I'm pretty confident that a 31x10.5 tire on a 15x8 wheel is the largest I should go with a stock TJ.

What I'm not sure of is what the ideal backspacing would be. I've seen examples of everything from 3.75" to 5" that will work. But what is the BEST choice for the least chance of rubbing?

31's will fit on stock rims with maybe a little rubbing which can be taken care of with a few washers on the stops. The stock backspacing is around 5.5" so anything less than that should work. 3.75" backspacing is enough to keep 33x12.5 tires from rubbing and will push the 31's to the outside of the flares.
Most aftermarket 8" rims are made to fit wider tires so just pick the rims you like and go with them.

For a do everything wheel, 3.75 BS give or take. Why? Because it does not stick out stupidly far with a small tire and yet provides clearance for big tires should you ever need or want them.

^^^ this. On a 10.5 wide tire its perfect.

I have 31s with 3.75 BS and the tires stick out beyond the edge of stock flares about 1.5 inches. There's plenty of room for bigger tires.

With you saying you're not going to modify your Jeep to go with larger than 31x10.50 tires, I would go with as close to 5" of backspacing as you can find. Going with less backspacing with that, especially with as little as 3.75", would make your 31x10.50 tires stick out unnecessarily further than is needed.

I run 4.5" back space with my 33" x 12" tires and have a washer behind each wheel stop with no rubbing. 10.5" tires would stick out approximately 3/4" less so you should be good with 4.5"-5" of back space.

Thanks for the responses! Just to be clear here...

If a 3.75" BS wheel will have 31x10.5 tires sticking out 1.5" from the fenders, then that means a 5" BS will have the tires sticking out by about 1/4"... correct?

And, if I ever get a chance to do some mods and then go with 33x12.5 tires, it would be better to have a wheel with a smaller BS? But then, wouldn't they stick out by 2.25" with a BS of 3.75"? Wouldn't I want them in closer or is that necessary for them to fit?

With bigger tires, where does rubbing occur first? On the inside or on the fender lip?

That's correct

Yes, with a wider tire you would need less back spacing or wheel spacers. They would stick out further, but you would need the clearance on the inside.

Normally the inside of the tire on the lower control arms.
