Ply wood or MDF and a jig saw. Cut a piece that will fit behind the seat flat across the tub on the wheel wells. Then drill holes and bolt it down. Throw some carpet on it and your done. For cheap too.

I tried to upload my pictures but it won't let me. I got black carpeting from walmart. It's called replacement car carpeting ($9 a roll). I got 1/2 wood, "L" shaped brackets and staple gun and staples from menard's. Measured it out and boom...done. It doesn't lock but you can't see what is inside of my truck. The height of my truck is 12.5 inches. Enough to put 30 packs of beer under the shelf...lol. I took out my backseat so mine is bigger then what you are wanting but the same idea. I didn't want to drill any holes in my Jeep and it doesn't rest on anything but the cargo area. It is heavy enough that it doesn't move. When I can I can upload the pictures or PM with your email and I will send you pictures if you want.

I did very much the same thing except I built a full box with clamshell lids, lockable, and a removable center divider the length of it. Beneath the center divider is a large long bolt that goes into the original bolt hole for the center seat belt.. It ain't movin' no matter what happens..

Very simple. Use cardboard to make your template, cut it out of a piece of wood and then paint it. It's held in place with some aluminum flat bar with a 90 degree bend at the top. Couple of self tapping screws through the side and bingo. If you need to remove it just take the screws out and toss it on the side.

If you want to block off access from the seat side just cut a piece to act as a wall there.

How much room do you have under the horizontal piece to the tub floor. I'm thinking of doing this but I'd like to know that dimension.

Let me see if I remember...from front to back I believe it was 35.5 inches. The top board is 36 inches fron to back (the .5 inches is for the back board piece). Back measurements (closest to the seats) is 4 ft. front (closest to the gate) I believe was 34 inches. The sides are 12inch boards. When I went to Menard's I got a 4'x4' (1), 12"x4' (3), bunch of "L" brackets. I cut my pieces first, put it together and then carpet the whole thing using a staple gun. I hammered in the staplers. I made sure to staple in places where it wasn't visible to the eyes.

If I had to do it over again, I could have made the side wings on hinges so I could slide out the shelf without havign to take the whole top off. And made the wings a bit longer to completely fit across. Right now it is about 1.5 inches shy on each side. I still might do this. But for now I am happy.

My advice...measure measure measure. I accounted for the wheel wells, having access to the storage bin and the hooks for the backseat. I wanted my sides to clear the hooks on the floor. I also lined the inside of the shelf and the bottom so my hardtop panels would not get scratched from the hooks on the floor or any of the "L" brackets. It doesn't lock but however, unless they can unlock the tailgate, you won't be getting to the under part of the shelf. I am happy with it. It allows me to have a storage area for my hardtops and still have a place to carry stuff around.

Thanks. I plan on making the whole thing out of cardboard first to check for size. I would like to make a vertical tower in the middle below the horizontal shelf to slide guns into so they are not visible. Also will be hinging the side shelves. The more I can keep out of sight the better.

Thanks again for the dimensions.

Isn't the down side of this, without a panel against the back of the seat enclosing it, the items are not secure. Someone can drom the seat and get at the items.

Yes, you are correct. But it would be easy to add a wall against the back of the seat. I did it just to prevent any items back there from being seen. Out of sight out of mind. If someone walks by the Jeep and sees a 10" sub sitting there they may take it, but if they don't see it they don't even know it's there. Plus, the new seat cover that I just put on covers the release handle so unless they are familiar with Jeeps they won't even know how to move the seat.

The key to preventing things from being stolen is to keep them from being seen.

Benn thinking about this project myself. Those that haves one this. Hear is my though. Mounting hinges onto the tailgate and a piece of plywood to the hinges. The hinges would be mounted on the underside of the plywood and only allowed to open 90 degrees. Then at each end of the plywood have some type do foldable or retractable extenders, so when flipped up it would hold securely to the wheel wells. That have it not permanently mounted in trunk position.
