idle issues

Hey guys my tj just took a turn for the worse, its a 98 2.5 5 speed and here lately its been acting up. When i take off in 1st it will go up to 2 grand and start sputtering like its out of gas, i take it out of gear and it is fine again.. put it back in and bam nothings wrong, only first gear, and the weird thing is it only does it every so often.every other gear is normal. Im stumped on whats wrong, fuel filter is good oil is changed breather is clean, runs awesome considering its turning 33's at highway speeds with no issue. Im about to tear it apart once my xj is built, but since its my dd and i work 6 days a week i kinda need an idea where to start looking. Thanks guys

Three possibilities come to mind for an idle issue... in no particular order... bad TPS (throttle position sensor), dirty IAC (Idle Air Controller which can be cleaned), or a bad upstream 02 sensor. For your exact symptoms, I'd lean more towards the 02 sensor first, followed by the TPS. Assuming you've already checked for bad plugs, distributor cap, and rotor first.
When you have a choice, buy American.
