It's a pain! Why not cut a hole through the floor right above the fuel pump ring - next time replacing the fuel pump is easy!
It has to be a hole large enough to let you get the ring and pump through the hole, and be positioned right above it.
You have to drop the tank the first time before cutting the hole to measure and cut it - no fair cutting too deep through the floor into the tank or lines, and sparks aren't fun either.
But after it's cut it's easy to access the pump.
Simply cut a piece of sheet metal larger than the hole and screw it on with sheet metal screws. You can seal it with Dum Dum, or even Duct Tape.
Many vehicles already have access holes in the floor to reach the pump, so it's not a new idea.
Eh, it's not a bad idea, but the way it sits up there, I'd bet it would be a pain in the ass to actually access without cutting your hands all up. Not to mention, that plastic o-ring that locks the fuel pump in there requires some OOMPH and some steady pressure to make sure it locks on properly. Plus, the next owner may not be too happy about a duct taped circle in the bed Eh, I don't know, for how little you have to actually access the fuel pump, I don't think the job is all that strenuous.
Drop it with an empty tank and it isn't tough. I dropped it by myself to install the Kilby skid and did it with a simple floor jack after disconnecting the lines and wires.
For an old man like me it's not so easy. My pump went bad, I screwed up - I bought one from a parts house rather than the Jeep dealer (no not from Autochina, I knew better than that! This was from NAPA.) But I cut the hole and made the plate when I did it.
The "new" pump lasted not quite a week.
Putting another pump in was a snap (this time from the Jeep dealer.) Yes, it's close to the floor but enough room to do it fine. The ring needs persuasion, but it's not supposed to be gorilla tight.
Anybody that would object to my putting an access hole in the floor with a solid plate over it would never even know about it - they'd never get that far. They'd run away screaming because of all the other mods on it already - suspension, cage, etc. If they want a virgin they'd have to go elsewhere. Besides, it's not for sale.
I got the 2nd pump from the dealer - when I compared the real one to the knock-off it was easy to see the big difference in quality.
The Kilby tank skid plate? Too fragile for me - I built my own.
All that really matters is that it works for ya. When I did my skid back there, I was doing other things in that area, so dropping the tank was for more than just the skid - it as convenient for all the work being done.
If the Kilby is too fragile for ya, you must be pounding that back end real hard on SOMETHING! :bottom:
Dropping the tank is the easy part. Undoing those little clippy plastic things on the lines without breaking them is the hard part.
