Ignition Key Comes Out When Running

Hey Kids:

99 Wrangler TJ 2.5.

My ignition key comes out (if I pull it) when the jeep is running.

Now Daveys Jeeps sells the tumblers, used, with key for 10 dollars, as opposed to around 60 bucks new at an auto parts store.

However, will a new tumbler solve the problem, or does my jeep need the key lock steering column gizmo (looks like a single piece of metal) that Daveys Jeeps has for 110 dollars, and that you cannot get from the dealer?

All you need is the $10 part with the key.

Mine does too and I love it. It reminds me of my old '75. And '77. They both did the same thing

With my '03, the key will come out if I turn in counterclockwise past off.

Is the key coming out necessarily a bad thing?

Lucky you .... Wish mine did... I remember my Chevys doing that, it was very convenient when I didn't want to shut it down to open the trunk, glove box etc etc... or in our case, tail gate, center console glove box... Unless it's creating a problem starting/running just leave it... or if you prefer change out the lock cylinder... JMO

Thanks guys. No, it isn't inconvenient and it never comes out unless I pull on it and even has come in handy a time or three.

I was afraid of the ignition key assembly going Kaput when I needed the jeep, and was hoping a 10 dollar part was the fix. And it is!

Will order tomorrow, and thanks.

Mine does this as well. I LOVE it. I wouldn't want to fix this so called "problem." I keep my EZpass in the glovebox since I usually have the top off, this way i can lock it up again while I'm driving no problem.

haha my friends TJ does this, it's a weird cool feature.. I'm glad mine doesn't however. I get paranoid about things like that, and I would also think it means that it's closer to failure.

My 97 Sport does this. I love it. When the engine is running I can still use the key to unlock the tail gate and load stuff in and then lock it up again. I then just reinsert my key in the ignition.

Mine recently started to do it also but the issue is the radio goes off as the key comes out. It is sliding out more frequently while driving and the radio shuts off and I have to push it back in.

I HAVE found myself tryin to shave the key down a lil (turning/pulling)
when waiting for someone in the store from time 2 time, hoping it will come loose like a Yj or older.

That can be a problem, maybe to many keys and such hanging on your ring? I would definitely entertain the idea of a loose key...
