Ignition Switch

I have a 2000 se 4cly. Last night i depressed the clutch to stop, and my turn signals stopped working, the airbag light came on and there was a loud noise. The transmission is worked find for the short drive home, but every time I depressed the clutch the noise would occur. My buddy popped the hood, and said it sounded like the starter was en-gauging when I depressed the clutch. Started it this morning and everything was working fine. Could this be a ignition switch problem? Maybe a mechanical instrument cluster? or something more serious? When the noise occurred my headlights did dim just like they would when during a normal start. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I find myself reading threads about ignition switch issues because my 2000 SE also has been acting up. About one in 10 times key will start the car, but the airbag light stays on and the radio doesn't work. About one in 20 times the key doesn't automatically return from the crank position, leaving the starter engaged if I'm not quick about turning it back. I tried some graphite as a quick fix, but am pretty certain a new ign switch is in my near future.

I'll post again if I find another solution.

Thanks 67, Like you I have been looking all over this forum for a thread that has symptoms more like mine. I'm sure I can fix the airbag light and turn signals, with help from the other threads. My main concern is the starter engaging when I depress the clutch, when the Jeep is already running. This is where I'm struggling to find any good information.
