Don't hate on the 2.4..... It's not it's fault it was part of a conspiracy on the Germans part to ruin the vehicle that won the war. I like mine. I get great mileage and it's low on power but shit it's not a Ferrari

Dude for the price difference for a used 4.0 and a used 2.5 just spend the extra money and get a 2.5. The reason that I get frustrated with my 2.5 is not because it is god awful slow (which it definitely is) but because it gets horrible gas mileage from having to exhaust itself in day to day traffic. I get 13/14mpg city 16/mpg hwy.

I think others have been saying this too: take the dollar cost difference between a 2.5 and a 4.0 and either swallow it or put it in the formula. It's a very subjective number, because few used Wranglers are otherwise alike, whether be miles, condition, mods or all of the above. Then consider the final product of your labor and parts to add a turbo or whatever to increase power. The same funds in a 4.0 will be a vastly superior powerplant. And if you are going to run larger tan stock tires and other popular mods, I'd venture a guess that MPG would be close, maybe even better in some cases. One thing I can say with a degree of certainty: you will have more $$ into a 2.5 as it meets or begins to pass the stock 4.0 in power, and even then it would probably be just streetable horsepower, not low end torque. So if you're stuck on being a bit different, go for it. But I don't think there's much practicality in the endevor. But like you, I am looking for a rig right now. I won't pass over a sweet 2.5 for the right price. But that would just accelerate plans for a LS or 4BT swap - I wouldn't put a dime into making the 2.5 more powerful.

Nope, a tranny from a 2.5 is not rated for a I6.

The axles are the same as i6, just geared lower. The ax5 tranny is weak sauce even for the 4 cylinder.

So if in the future I wanted to do an easy engine swap I would just need to put in a tranny and l6? Maybe a few modifications

I'm doing a ls swap. I wouldn't say an easy swap, but doable in a garage. Had to weld I motor mounts, make tranny mount and gauges will be aftermarket. Check out Novak-adapt.com for some info.

I6 has different motor mount location, tranny should work instock location and you need new input gear for t case
