I'm buying a 2.4L on purpose!

That's right, I'm about to buy a 2.4l jeep on purpose! That's crazy talk, you say... im convinced that this little motor is a sleeping giant. From what research I have done these motors are very similar to the srt-4, which put down in the area of 200rwhp in stock form! The hardcore guys get 400+!! Now I realize that the srt motor is built for the turbo, low compression and forged bottom end components .. But it still shows the potential of the 2.4.
I'm a gear head and love a challenge, so I'm buying this jeep specifically to see if can get some power out of it.
Any thoughts?

I should probably add, that this is not my first jeep. It will be my forth. I have had two Cjs one with a 4 banger and one with a Chevy v8. I also drove a 4.0 tj for many years. And finally I have no real intentions of wheeling my new jeep. It's primarily a back and forth to work vehical..

And let me add to say that my 2008 srt-4 had 330hp easily. The torque was in the low 300 range. 2.4L with stock turbo at 18psi

good luck. I'm sure it can be done, but running such a small motor at such a high output has consequences. you may be throwing away the jeeps rugged simple reliability doing so.

I have no desire to have some obscene amount of power, but I would like to see if I can get in the area of 200rwhp.

Look at a supercharger kit. Properly tuned you can get some really nice torque numbers with even higher hp at very low rpms

The 2.4L is a good little motor. I've got a cold air intake and im about to put on a thrush muffler and I'm getting around 21 mpg. I'm not to concerned about HP but it's enough for me. Ohh and early cj5's only had 4 cly....

The Jeep 2.4 has been turboed before. If I remember correctly theyll hold 8-10 psi of boost without swapping in the SRT-4 bottom end.
I've got a 2.4 too and im really interested in throwin a turbo on it.

CJs have had 4 cylinder engines available since the 1940s.

ALL CJ's came with 4cyl engines ONLY, from 1944 (the first year for the civvie) through 1965, and was still an option through the remainder of the CJ run.

How do you get 200RWHP out of a 190CHP engine?
He's talking Rear Wheel Horse Power. Not the same as Crankshaft horsepower.

That's only 2000 and newer 4.0's with the updated manifold. 99 and older only put out 180.

I have a thrush welded on my 4.0 and really like it! Only $40 can't beat it...

Have not gotten it yet but I'm going to as soon as my income tax check comes. It's not the welded one just a 28 dollar thrush cheapo. But it'll be better than the holes in my muffler now!

True, i missed the 'wheel' mention.

but the concept is the same. Why mod a smaller engine for power in a vehicle designed for a larger engine that already has more power.

The guy who posted about HP has an '04, so I didn't see the need to include that.

To me, building the 2.4L engine in a Wrangler to produce high-RPM HP makes as much sense as installing the stump puller 4.0L Jeep engine into a Corvette would. Both would be at cross-purposes in my personal opinion given the distinctly different purposes of the vehicles.

I think it's important for people to realize that I don't want some 8k rpm rice rocket.. I want to work within the stock rpm range. I'm just trying to build a 4cyl that can comfortably move the jeep. I'm really convinced this motor is very capable and has lots of potential. I realize I could just buy a 4.0 but what fun is that?

Im still with ya op! Off road the 2.4 has plenty of power. With a small turbo the motor wouldnt only make good power at super high RPM's, but it could build a few psi of boost around 2.5 to 4k RPM and I could see it making 220-250 hp easily. While the turbo wouldnt really do a whole lot off road, it would help a ton around town and on the highway.

Build a high comp N/A 2.4L. My turbo is ok but I would build a N/A engine if I was to do it again. The 420a is the same engine basically and lots of parts are available.
