Im looking into buying my fist Jeep

Hi everyone, Im looking into buying a TJ and I have some questions. I have found a 2001 with 49,000mi. I just want to ask about a few things the seller has told me so far about the Jeep. I havent physically seen it yet, although I may go this weekend. He says it has a ProComp 4" suspension lift, 33" ProComp M/T's. I asked him if it had a D35 or D44 rear...

here is what he said:
It has the stock dana 35 with stock ring and pinion 3.08. I replaced the spider gears last spring and have a large differential limited slip carrier that I was going to swap in with lower (4.10) gears. Also have large carrier for the front with 3.73 gears that hasn't been installed.

I was wondering if its odd to be changing the spider gears with so little milage... If there are any things I should look out for on an '01, or just in general when looking at TJ's, let me know. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Is he planning on putting in a 4.11 rear end with a 3.73 front end? He'd better not put it in 4wd. It sounds like you are buying pieces of a Jeep. Even if he does put a working Jeep together, what kind of warranty does he offer? This is why you buy mall crawler stock Jeeps and stay away from custom Jeeps unless you know the seller personally.(and that's a risk as well)

I agree with TEX

What part of the Country are you in?

I sell Jeeps on the Internet I might be able to help you.

1/2 the fun of owning a Jeep is doing mods yourself.

Start stock; build it up, you don't have to do the work yourself you can still send it out but at least you know what goes into this Jeep.

yeah, you shouldn't put different gears in the front from the rear, so it kinda worries me that he's saying that. and if he's runnin 33's with a d35, it doesn't surprise me that he's broken some internals. there's no telling how hard he's wheeled it. if you really wanna look into this jeep, start with driveline parts. crawl up under there and see if there is any play in the u joints, track bar, etc. check under the hood for signs of hard mud/water play such as mud that's settled in the air box. jeeps are notorious for rear main seal leaks. make sure there's no body lift(or at least no more than 1'') cause that's just unhappy all around. hope that helps, and that's all i can come up with right now.....a bit sleepy. more will chime in with other suggestions.

Would the 3.08 gears even move the 33's? maybe Im not fully understanding the difference in gears... because i have a 4.10 gear and cant move my 33" tires and now I have to go to a 4.88 gear not a 3.08

if he's got 3.08's, then he has the 4.0, which can turn 33's, granted it's not the greatest set up. do you have the 2.5L with 4.10's like i do? the little 2.5 just doesn't have the grunt to push 33's well without going to 4.56 or 4.88.

what engine mods-if any do you have khenderson? Im lookin to do the 2.5 to 4.0 throttle body switch, all the intake stuff, and performance cat-muffler, do you know of any head changes available? cant find nothing for this tiny 2.5L (boy I wish I knew I was gonna make all these mods...I'd got a bigger engine)

I think you guys are misunderstanding what he said. As I read it, it's got 3.07's front & rear, but he has an LSD for the rear with 4.10s, and the 3.73 carrier for the front which will also work with 4.10's (but the stock 3.07 carrier won't). So in other words - all you need is a front 4.10 R&P and you're ready to go from the stock 3.07's (which must s*ck w/ 33's!) to 4.10 with a rear LSD.
