In the market

This is my first time posting in the jeep forum by the way. But, I have a 2000 jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and looking to get a TJ. Something way more fun right! I have been looking here in Louisiana but there aren't too many around or at a decent price. I was wondering what you guys think about buying out of state. I have found a 1997 TJ I am really interested in, in Ohio. The hard part is I know I can't test drive it and check the gears ,or look under it for huge rust growths, is it still worth it to go out there? Or what should I do?

I am basically looking for a starter TJ, something that I can build how I want. But If you ever have any for sale I would be happy to hear about them. Thank you!

Stay away from any jeep from Ohio, Michigan , Indiana, or any where northeast of those states. They don't call it the rust belt for nothing.. Unless of course the seller can guarantee there is no rust.. I'm in south central PA, very mild winters, and virtually no rust as I vary rarely drive on salted roads, when I do a thorough power washing is immediate... Good luck !!

I had to look really hard to find my rustfree 99 tj here in Indiana. So while i did find one here, being from here i would not recommend getting one from here without a VERY VERY thourogh look over.

I have been looking here in Louisiana for a while now. If there is a TJ out here, it is way over priced. But thank you guys for the advice. I guess I will try to stay close to home if I want one. Hopefully one will pop up.

I had that problem, with the over pricing and looked out of state, ended buying one from a used car dealer, still paid 6k though for my 97

Absolutely! We've owned 11 Harleys and one BMW over the years and still like to do a bit of two-wheeling. But .... we patiently shopped for a TJ last year and found a gem that has provided tons of fun that matches our bike rides! No concern for weather or road conditions anymore with the Jeep. Our rag top is plenty warm in the winter and all the doors come off in the summer.

Mileage is poor, but that's part of the deal. Hard to measure the value of a good time. We find back roads and drive til the cooler is empty. For a longer trip, we hit the "blues" trail in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee for 5 days. We got blown out on the Interstates but all the more reason to find a side road to explore and stumble into some little burg with a family restaurant or a bed and breakfast.

If you hang in there, you'll find what you want, no matter which State in the Union. As you know, people who really care keep their vehicles garaged and out of harms way.

Look in Texas. I've bought a few vehicles out there much cheaper than anything around here. I had the same problem here in Mississippi. Either 4 cylinders or overpriced. Happened to find my 98 Sahara north of Memphis.
