Hey everybody I am in the process of buying an 06 LJ it's basically stock. Does anyone have any tips or tricks on any simple obvious modifications I should make any I can't live without my _ _ _
I can't live without my membership to vehicle specific forums where I can look around and read everything I will ever need to know about a particular vehicle.
Thanks for the tips the jeep is an 06 LJ with a 6 speed manual tranny. Seems to run good and is pretty clean. Once I get the deal done I will post some pictures.
X3 on the OPDA. I replaced mine when it started to make a racket. Supposedly the replacement by Dorman is a good design because it allows engine oil to lubricate it. The factory ones were a "lubed for life" unit that would eventually seize up when all the grease leaked out.
Also check the cooling system. Mine had tap water in it at some point which rotted the entire system out. Replaced everything but the engine.
Evap hoses- I'm going through a 6-month long streak on my LJ of not being able to pass inspection due to the dang EVAP code throwing the check engine light. Found 2 cracked hoses today, as well as the engine leaking gas at the elbow brackets. Simple repairs, but throws you through loops trying to find them.
Enjoy the LJ though, best purchase I've ever made even though sometimes it can be a living nightmare.
All model years that are known to have consistent issues will have some units that will perform the way they intended them to. That may be sheer luck. But I would still stay clear of model years that have shown to be problematic.
Would anyone recommend replacing the OPDA as a preventive maintenance type thing? Is they an amount of miles or amount of time it could or should be replaced?
I feel like that, since we are all somewhat automotive aware, that every vehicle has its problems and are "notorious" for certain issues. Let's not forget that almost every new vehicle on the market had explosive airbags with shrapnel inside, wiring issues that caught fire, gas pedals that stuck, transmissions that wouldn't recognize park and killed scottie.
I mean really, are we so ignorant to put down vehicles even though every vehicle ever made has had issues. OR it comes down to maintenance, and yes, some people are idiots and don't take care of their vehicles and ruin them without ever knowing. So...yeah...just food for thought, we all have an opinion.
Some people can't help disparaging what they don't own. Some hear a single or half a dozen horror stories and blow it out of proportion, assuming "most have issues", when they really don't. My 06 LJ with 6 speed manual is just fine, and I drive it off road all the time. I replaced the OPDA at about 88k miles, but not because the original failed. It never did. It was precautionary. Trans is just fine if you don't get lazy and leave it partially out of gear, and if you don't constantly try to downshift into first while moving at 30+ mph.
Don't let some of these naysayers scare you off..nothing wrong with that jeep...but as to the question about OPDA, yes I would replace it as a precaution...100 bucks is easy insurance policy
So...If you are wanting to take care of it, and keep it reliable, Do Not Use Ethanol! Ethanol will destroy the O-Rings and Rubber Seals, in the fuel system. and destroy the Rubber Vacuum Hoses for the Pollution Control System.
