Inside of tailgate, what are the slits for?

I wonder what the horizontal slits on the inside of the tailgate are for?
Haven't got pictures to show you but I mean the large slits that are in a square formation, 8 on the left, 8 on the right and 2 in the middle.
They look like vents or something, but what are they for?

The reason why I'm asking is because I need to cover them up because they are creating a distorted noise when air/sound from my subwoofers in the trunk are going through them.

I hope they're not important

They are vents. They let air escape if you have a hard top, so the doors will close. If you run a soft top, it won't matter. If you have a hard top and cover them, then closing the doors will be difficult with the windows rolled up.

Thanks for the quick answer.
Well thats pretty clever. I've got the softtop on so I guess it won't matter, which is good news since I already covered them up.

They started the vents in the tailgate in 2003 I believe. That's when they stopped putting the vents in the rear corners of the hard tops. I'm double vented because I have an 02 hard top and an 03 tailgate.
